Platinum Procyon, Kaweco Al Sport or Dia2

Question

In the UK, Platinum Procyon (bit of a tongue twister) in Deep Sea, Kaweco AL Sport and Kaweco Dia2 are pretty much the same price.  Assuming you could only pick one and not exchange the nib, which is best?

I would use all unposted except for AL Sport.

Procyon Deep Sea is a pretty colour and style but goes downhill in my opinion when the cap is removed.

A L Sport in red looks nice.  I like my skyline sport but when closed it just looks so small.

Dia2 (chrome trim) looks very smart.

It's very difficult to provide advice if you don't state a few more parameters of préference.

The Procyon is a bigger pen, probably more comfortable to hold for long sessions. The dia2 is often said to be comfortable but that must be for smaller hands. The Al Sport would be dead last for sure in this regard.

Nib wise, the Procyon will be more reliable. Kaweco nibs tend to have baby bottoms especially at medium or higher.

If you need a pocket pen, the Al Sport will be unrivaled by these other two but I would still be concerned about nib issues.

Hi Lugworm,

Performance wise; I'll take the Procyon's every time.

My only gripe with it, is the threads can be on the sharp side. Other than that, I prefer it to the Kaweco's 5:1.

All of my pens are in the "novelty" category, for want of a better word.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with the above, I was just considering getting something a bit nice.  The 3776, pro gear, Pilots all seem too small (uncapped) and way over my budget.  The Dia2 seems nice but the nib I believe is the same as the Al=Sport.  I think I can rule out the Procyon, although I love the colour.

You're welcome.

Perhaps the Procyon in the Deep Sea color is dignified enough?

The Dia2 is the most dignified of the trio, but as Muddy Waters alluded to; it took me three nib units to turn it into a decent writer, (trying to repair them got me nowhere). For a pen that costs $130, I expect a lot more.

I wonder if there is another option I haven't thought of.

I know I mentioned sticking with the original nib.  But I was thinking of the really expensive gold nibs.

A Bock 076 in steel is only about £12.  If the Kaweco nib happens to be below par, the Bock should remedy it.  The Dia2 has become a more attractive proposition.

This.

For the record, the original is also Bock.

Add lightness and simplicate.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
