Pelikan 4001 Pink, Now in Bottles

Recommended Posts

I was in one of my local brick and mortar stores yesterday, and while waiting patiently 2m behind the person checking out in front of me, my eyes fell on a box with a bottle of Pelikan 4001 Pink in it, which became an impulse purchase.

Pelikan has offered pink ink in cartridges for some time, but pink is a new offering since only a couple of months in bottles. Pink is not typically a major color for me, but it is for a few folks I know who are for whatever reason constantly the lookout for a new pink, so I bought the bottle to prepare samples.

I suppose if you like pink, it is pleasant enough. To my eye (on a couple of different white and slightly creamy papers—the photo is 80g Rhodia) the ink seems to flow a neutral bright pink, but it dries somewhat in the purple/blue (fuschia-ish) direction.

It behaves a lot like most of my other 4001, maybe slightly dry, moderate shading on non absorbent papers, and more flat on papers with a bit more absorption.

Do I need another pink ink?  No.  Would I get this one if available?  Probably....  Any clue if these are going to make it to this side of the pond anytime soon?

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

As far as I am able to find out, 4001 Pink is now in regular production in bottles, and there are no production issues that anyone I have spoken with knows about. As is (or should be) well known, Pelikan has a sole distributor in N. America, so I guess the first step is that the distributor needs to get of its corporate butt and order some stock (if the investment is an issue, maybe also prod some of their retailers to pre-order, to give them some confidence in how much ink they can move).

Then of course the retailers need to get it into their inventory and offer it for sale. I am not sure where the delays is.

Short story: there is nothing technical or logistical I can find out that is holding back the sale of 4001 Pink in the USA. I can conjecture laziness/indifference within the supply chain.

I've always had the carts of this (just to keep my Pelikan collection complete) although I don't like the color. To me it has never been a real pink but more a magenta.

Yes, in my experience it goes on close to pink, but definitely dries in the magenta direction. I have the same problem with pink that I have with red. Pink inks always seem to be either a little bit yellow or a little bit blue.

Perhaps it's good to make ink mixes

Ah, wine, whisk(e)y, ink...sometimes the art of looking for that perfect blend...

I am not much of a mixer myself, but I would  conjecture that all the 4001 inks would play fairly well together as mixes, and there are enough colors in the basic palette to create interesting colors.

Maybe I can find one of those old M205(?) Telekom special editions to use with the ink...?

I was going to try L'amant in mine but ended up not.

I am thinking 4001 Pink might look interesting coming out of my Edison Brockton in Miami Nights (sort of a black/blue/magenta striated sort of thing)...
