Pilot Deskpen DPN-70 - Has Pilot Stopped Making Them?

Maurizio

Recommended Posts

I bought a DPN-70 about a year ago. It is a great pen if you like smooth and fine writers. I use this as a sketch pen and love it. I use it with a Con-40 converter.  I want to buy another one but everywhere I look they are “unavailable”. Bought this first one from Jetpens. No longer available there. None available via Amazon. Pensachi apparently doesn’t carry them. I do not like to use eBay and don’t want to pay rare pen prices.

I am curious if anyone here knows whether Pilot has decided to discontinue this pen.

I also have a Platinum Deskpen which is good but I like the Pilot better because it is smoother.

Thanks for any insight.

Thanks for the tip Amanda! That was sweet. I just ordered one in black bc my first was red. So pleased to have found a source for these pens.

Shipping was a killer though.

Well,  my question has been answered I think. Jetpens, a USA vendor, replied to my inquiry to them about the availability of this pen by telling me it has been discontinued by the manufacturer. I’m glad I have one on the way from Australia even though it cost me quite a bit for the shipping.

The eBay ones seem fairly reliable as they're from Hong Kong rather than mainland China. About $15USD plus free shipping for one. Or $23 USD for a pair and free shipping.

Thanks for the tip Bounce. I don’t use eBay generally but if I hadn’t already ordered one from around the globe from me I’d consider it.

Bounce -

I missed the import of your post on my first pass. Are you stating that these pens were manufactured in Hong Kong, and, mainland China, pursuant to Pilot’s quality standards as your post implies?

If that is so, do you know the names of the manufacturers? I would like to research and see if those continue to make desk pens which may be similar but don’t bear the imprimatur of a Pilot pen.

Thanks for any further information.

I meant more that these are likely NOS in Hong Kong. After all, Pilot is a much bigger brand in Asia than in Europe and America. There are many Pilot products I can only get in Asia which are unavailable in the US. So, I was saying that if it is Hong Kong, it is likely to be authentic Japan-made Pilot products which are just sitting in a warehouse because there's very little demand for them. Many Asian retailers use eBay as a way of clearing stock and reaching a global rather than regional market.

Deskpens are a very European/American thing. Asians don't have a place for them in their culture or general habits. It's like brush pens for European/American writers.

To my knowledge, Pilot has never manufactured pens in China or Hong Kong. They've only done it in South Korea and India in the past. Currently, AFAIK, only Japan, somewhere in Europe, and the US are their manufacturing bases.

Thanks for clarifying Bounce.

I had no idea that Pilot manufactured pens in the USA. Fountain pens too?

Interesting.

Interesting.

That's the only way to keep up with demand for things like the G2 and their mechanical pencils - wouldn't be cost effective (without being a Pilot accountant) in my opinion to have to ship thousands of pens and pencils over to the US every few months.

As far as fountain pens go, I do not know. Those may still be limited to the Japanese factory so that they can claim the "Made in Japan" is true.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
