It's good to be back!

I have been away from any and all Pen Talk Groups and the Pen Show circuit for sometime now. That does not mean that I stopped going to my Pen Turning Shop however. I had a 51 years career that I had to turn attention too as I entered retirement. My wife said after my last formal sermon, " I think you should consider retirement". I quizzed her as to why. She said, " In your last sermon you got the facts about David and the Giant a bit wrong.David slew the Giant with his Slingshot, he did not kick the hell out of him".  Perhaps she is right. So now I am turning my attention back to the hobby I enjoy, turning pens.

Early in this new year I will be doing four activities:   1. A new Website. { It is being developed} It will feature many of the more than one thousand pens that I have turned during the past twenty plus years. They will appear in Library form for viewing. I do plan to continue turning custom order pens and also introducing a "limited edition" or two. Two of my special collector friends will be displaying and offering selected pens for sale. Dr. Bob Nisbet owns an extensive collection of vintage and modern pens. His knowledge of both old and new pens is evident of many years of intense interest in the hobby. Mr. Steve Kern is somewhat new to the Pen Show circuit but nonetheless has a very nice collection to display on the website. 2. I am opening a new retail shop in February or March. The shop name will be, PEN and INK to PAPER. I am very pleased to offer a place for interested person to come sit, talk, show, and purchase pens and related objects. 3. Oklahoma needs a PEN CLUB. I am working hard at creating a place for individuals interested in the hobby to come learn and share their experiences. Plans are to have formal bi-monthly meetings featuring guest speakers who will address subjects of interest to those who attend. 4. I have just purchased the equipment with which I can create a Youtube Channel. My new shop will have three or more individuals who have special skills related to the Pen Business.  A professional Jeweler will have a desk at which he/she will create beautiful items. Some will serve to augment the beauty of my pens. A desk where Fountain Pen repair will be able to be viewed up close. Hopefully, viewers will be able to post educational ideas as to how that activity can be done efficiently.

I look forward to being an active member of this forum. Watch my future post for more information concerning the new efforts I find myself involved with. My new email:  thompsonpens8248@gmail.com

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
