Pelikan M800 F vs Pilot Custom 823 M

I bought both of these pens and the pilot 823 is silky smooth and I love how it feels when I write. I had high hopes that the pelikan would be equally as smooth but it was rather scratchy. I used a loop and saw that the tines were not even so I adjusted them and now they are even and the pen is less scratchy but still scratchy when I maneuver it in certain directions. Are Pelikan fine Nib pens all a little scratchy. I am disappointed and thinking of reaching out to pelikan. I am new to this hobby so would appreciate any input.

Unless you bought the Pelikan 800 used the nib should have been checked and rectified by the place you bought it from.

If you bought the 800 new it is not a minor amount to pay out or else i'd have one myself!

Even if the pen was bought as used goods from a proper pen shop you'd like to think they'd do a dip-test at the very least with their higher price writing instruments.

Personally I find the Pelikan m800 F nib far smoother than the Pilot F nibs I own - largely bc it’s closer to a Pilot medium in width.

Thanks guys. I returned it to the authorized dealer Cult pens in the UK they were awsome and sent me a new one and tested it first before sending it back and now it is smooth and wonderful. I am now going to buy the red M600 tortoise shell limited edition from them also a fine nib. Thanks everyone. Being new I was not sure how it should have felt so appreciate the feedback.

Service is something of great value when you buy a pen by E-mail. 😉

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
