Hi from darkest Norfolk!

Hi im Martin, and am ( by profession) a free lance costume designer, however my other passion which has turned from a hobby in to a bit of a second income over lockdown, is collecting and restoring fountain pens. As i suffer from poor health and have had to shield for most of the past year, and the entertainment industry in the UK is practically non existent  at the moment, I needed to find other means of putting a crust on the table. My main means of doing this is computer generated models used in CGI and 3d art, another side hobby that proved to be a good way to make money, however the fountain pens also proved to be at the least a self sustaining side line and a good way of passing the time away from the computer over the past months. I love all old pens but have an especially weakness for Parker 51s, lady Schaeffer's and anything Wahl Eversharp!

I love a wahl, but have to say some are lovely ( skyline nibs especially always seem to be very smooth) but some wahl nibs can be like writing with a sharp stick. I think its because they made nibs for all sorts of uses in offices where stiff nibs were needed for carbon copies and the like. I get the feeling that the skyline range were never really intended for that market.

Haha yes that was in my mind, used to work on ships and did a dry dock in Norfolk, as with the US we too are next door to Suffolk.

Hello from Cambridge :) (also the one in England!)

I have a hobbyist interest in costume design, started out as LARP costume making then I got curious and ended up learning how to draft my own patterns. And now I have far more fabric than I'll ever use!

Hello and welcome to you from a very wet Manchester ( yep also in England ie Non EU !) so Norfolk eh, two memories of that area. One was a really relaxing boating holiday which I was dreading but really enjoyed the other was a visit to the Lotus factory when a good friend of mine was picking up his new Espirit......oh and its flat and has or had poor roads linking it to the motorway network. Anyway enjoy your time on here, clever bunch and a ton of pen knowledge.

Haha Flat you say.... Norwich is not flat, not mountainous but pretty damn hilly. The county does have a big chunk of the fens and the broads in it tho which are absolutly flat as a pancake.  The nice thing about this part of the world are the atrocious road links to the rest of the world, keeps the rif raff out ( though sadly not the pandemic).

Hi! That’s wonderful that you found a side gig in a hobby. I have thought about trying my hand at restoration but I’m not very handy. I have been cataloguing a private collection (my pay might be one of the pens) and we found a Wahl and several Lady Sheaffers. ☺️

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
