Hi everyone! Long time lurker on FPN here. When FPN went down for maintenance, I realized how important it is to me and so I've signed up. :)

I've loved stationery my whole life, but I had never even heard the term "fountain pen"...until last year, when I walked into Vanness Pen shop in Little Rock looking for new letter paper. The rest is history.

 

My favorite aspect of fountain pens is the rainbow of inks and how beautiful they look, shading on paper. Best of all is that split second when the ink is wet and shiny, right before it sinks into the page. I don't really care about the looks or prestige of my pen - it needs to be slim, feel light comfortable in the hand and have a juicy, smooth nib. My favorites are my eyedroppered Platinum Preppy 0.5, as well as TWSBI Go BB nib (which isn't slim but IS juicy).

 

Fountain pen people are usually passionate, eccentric, fiercely opinionated (about important things such as paper), respectful of craftsmanship, and creative. That's why I like it here. Thank you for having me!

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
