Pelikan Ink of the Year 2021

Hey. I was on Facebook, and noticed an image of the Pelikan Ink of the Year 2021. It appeared to be a shimmer ink. When I tried to google more information, nothing appeared. Now, I am looking at Facebook again but the post cannot be found. Was it a troll post?

Hmmm.  I'd have to see this one in person.  For me, I have to like the base ink for any shimmer ink.

I'd hoped to get a look at Moonstone in person earlier this year, but the pandemic and lockdown cancelled so much stuff, including the Pelikan Hubs.

Some of the Ink of the Year selections have been wonderful (Amethyst, Olivine, Smoky Quartz, Red Ruby.  Moonstone was a maybe (I had been hoping to not have to order a sample first).  As for Adventurine I didn't really care for the color all that much, but it wasn't horrible.

Well let's see. We had the M200 Cognac that was indistinguishable from the M200 Smoky Quartz which will look the same as the M200 Beryl!

While it certainly looks intriguing in the promo photos, we've been burned before. At least they aren't showing an ink splash that could prove misleading <cough> Olivine <cough>.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I had expected them to do this for Moonstone, but I feel I've had my fill of glittery inks. Some brands proved too problematic and Herbin are the only ones left in my collection.

I have 5-6 Diamine shimmer inks....where I have to twist and turn the page to find it and they were not a light yellow/orange ink. I was also insisting on some shading. Not on my buy again list, not enough look down and see glitter.

I have a Herbin, dark grey with If I remember silver flecks....that really showed off the color of the flecks. That was see glitter ink, with out twisting paper.

So I'm not going to stand in line for this, unless it's the 9th wonder of the world.

So they've finally jumped on the unicorn barf bandwagon. Thought Pelikan had more sense. Happily this will break me of the habit of getting each IOTY, which is a Good Thing, but still a shame that this, of all things, was the request they decided to take notice of.

I am sort of in this camp of thought. I really do not like the idea suspended particles in my ink (I will rarely accept it as a necessary evil when signing "permanent" documents): I do not believe solid particles in the ink to be conducive to the long term health of a fountain pen, or at best they scream for extra maintenance of devices that are already somewhat finicky. So in that sense the shimmery stuff is a definite turn off. Also, shimmer can sometimes be a fickle thing: it appears when not really wanted, and mysteriously disappears when desired.

Where an interesting point may be scored is in the corresponding M200 pen. A golden translucent pen with gold shimmer similar to the silver shimmer in the past two IOTY pens might be interesting to me, if the color and shimmer are subdued enough.

If the ink color is a nice gold and is legible for at least a few paragraphs of writing, then this Ink of the Year may find a place in my cabinet. However, as pointed out above, if it is not to my eye stunningly beautiful, it will get passed on.

When you know how Pelikan fits in the market in Germany, where only very few inks sit on the shelves of bigger office supply stores crossing over to fancier brands and, as a top tier, the Montblanc corner in many department stores, one can be quite sure that the majority of people browsing those shops (in normal times, e.g. when people actually go out to buy stuff in person) will be seeing glitter inks for the very first time. It is easy to forget that brands like Diamine or even Herbin, esp. with their special inks lines, are mostly known to us enthusiasts. For us shimmer might be an old hat, but for the broad market ... still kind of a novelty.

Apart from that: The promo shots do look promising. 😉

Mee too, just when I thought I was done with shimmerglit i see this Golden Beryl 🤐 😍 I want.

The only shimmer i took a shining to was/is Robert Oster Heart of Gold so Pelikan seems to hit my hue vulnerability. I sunk in for Moonstone ink and pen and Golden Beryl with a sparkly M200 would be a matched done pair. I only wish it was a non-shimmer dark gold yellow like Robert Oster African Gold or brighter more orangey KWZ Honey. If I do reach for the Beryl Gold, I think i would only use the M200 Beryl as a dip pen seeing as Smokey Quartz gets "thicker" sitting in the Moonstone. Ah well, we gets what we gets, 2021 onward.

Shame!

I'm not about to put that kind of stuff in my pens.

I do find it a bit ironic/humorous that with this ink Pelikan seems to be trying to sell me something I wouldn’t feel good about putting into a Pelikan pen.

However, technology does advance (even with pens and inks), so I’ll try to keep an open mind.

I once heard that an open mind is a good thing... gotta try it one of these days 😄.

Seriously, though, It doesn't work for me.

I typically have a dozen or so pens inked and often it takes 1-2 months to go through them. So, I wouldn't be able to use this one in my pens. Besides, shimmering inks really do not attract me.

A mind is like a parachute: just because you’ve lost yours, doesn’t mean you can borrow mine...😛

Shimmering inks don't attract me either, I'm rather convinced they are not good for my pens, and don't really feel the need or fancy to use one. Saving up for the next, nice (blue) ink.

I fear this may cause me to fall to the sparkly side.

Meh, does very little for me. I have only a very few shimmer inks, and I keep them in cheap, easy to clean pens that I'm not bothered about. One - the Herbin Vert Atlantide - I really, really like and use a lot. The others are more for a specific look - mainly for sending things to children or for party things/gift wrapping.

This one won't be joining the collection.

As much as I like shimmer inks, they only go in my cheap, easy to clean, no clog Pilot Parallels. And yellow inks aren't really my cup of tea as I find them difficult to read. I do use the yellow highlighter ink, but that's really a specialty ink.  I love the Edelstein line, but this one just isn't a good fit for me either. I was really hoping for an Edelstein purple ink as Amethyst is unobtainable these days, but as I've already got a life time supply of inks, it's no great loss.

I'm jumping on the meh band wagon. An open mind is a good thing, but not so open that my brains fall out.

I dunno.  I really like Olivine.  Way more than Aquamarine, the one from a few years ago -- which I had mis-ID'd in a previous post as Adventurine (although not that big a fan of Adventurine, either, truth be told; or Jade, for that matter...).

Still trying to make up my mind whether to get a sample of Moonstone or not.  As for Beryl?  It's a wait and see....

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
