Hi Everyone,

I am pretty new to the fountain pen hobby. I have been enjoying fountain pens for about 1.5yrs now. I write a lot in my position and got tired of having loads of ballpoint pens that didn't work. It is interesting that my supervisor in grad school (18yrs ago) typically spent the first 15mins of our meetings talking about pens; he loved Visconti. Because of my memories of him, I started off with a Visconti rollerball. I've decided to limit myself to 20 fountain pens or fewer and my collection has changed a lot over 1.5yrs. I moved from TWSBI 580's and Conklin to my favorite top 5 pens (OMAS Paragon Arco Verde, OMAS Paragon Arco Bronze, Visconti Homo Sapiens Dark Age, Nakaya Decapod TW, and ASC Bologna Extra Arco Verde). I am a big fan of OMAS Paragons.

Welcome!

You have a wealth of great pen stores in the DMV, Bertram's Inkwell in Rockville, MD, Pen Boutique in Columbia, MD and Fahrney's in DC.

Thanks! I am very fortunate. I have been to Bertrams and Pen Boutique numerous times. The staff in both stores are great and I really enjoy shopping at them. I have yet to visit Fahrney's as I don't make it into DC frequently.

Welcome! It must be great to live close to 'real' pen stores - though I would probably need to be barred from the temptation :) Especially the inks...

It is great! Before the pandemic, I visited Pen Boutique quite frequently. It is nice to actually get to test the pens out and know who you are speaking to when there is an issue. And I enjoy getting to test out the inks.

Welcome! Lots of great information here and even more suggestions to expand your collection.

Cheers,

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
