The Cost Of Brexit

Ebay is applying its Global Shipping Program on UK items since about 10 days. I inquired about that questionably practice on Ebay's message board but have received no response. Not that many UK sellers have yet embraced the Global Shipping Program, fortunately, but I am quite confident that Ebay will force them to do that very soon.

The Global Shipping Program is extremely expensive and overcharges on import tax as well as on the actual shipping cost. It may be convenient for sellers but it seems to be designed to make profit on the buyer's expense in addition to what Ebay already charges the sellers. Since the introduction of the Global Shipping Program in the USA, I have cut my US buys with more than 75% and the same will now happen with my UK buys.

US sellers can opt out of the Global Shipping Program, and we opted out years ago when we saw the horrendous cost to the buyer.

That is quite brave. And that is another sneaky feature of the GSP: sellers are left completely unaware about the shipping cost that their buyers have to pay to Ebay.

Just so you're aware, the cut-off point here is €22

22€ is also the limit for Belgium and with current exchange rate that is circa USD 26.50.

Nevertheless, the Global Shipping Program already charges import tax for items valued as low as USD 22,80, as noticed just a minute ago when bidding on a pen from a US seller. This is fraudulent money making.

Oh, let's call it what it really is: it's theft.

The utterly ridiculous fees of the Global Shipping Program drastically reduced what I bothered to import from the States. Books that previously cost $5 to post suddenly cost $45 to post. I've never bought from any seller that uses that program.

i recently sold some items through eBay for the first time in several years and ticked the Global Shipping Program option without thinking too much about it because I'd used it successfully in the past.  Then I discovered that the US buyer of one of my watches had been charged $127 in shipping fees - absolutely outrageous, especially considering the watch took nearly 3 weeks to be delivered.  For about two-thirds of that cost I could have had the watch delivered to the buyer in 3 days.

To get a bit closer perhaps to the subject of this thread, Appelboom is now showing its prices to UK buyers ex-VAT.  I had to send an embarrassing (and embarrassed) email to CS after ordering what I thought were bargain offers, because on top of the suddenly cheaper prices I was able to use a 15% discount code.  I know from previous experience how good Appelboom's CS is, and true to form my order was changed immediately and the payment was refunded within 24 hours.

If you're in the UK and are accustomed to buying from the EU, do take care to check whether the prices are inclusive or exclusive of VAT.  I get the impression that a lot of retailers aren't quite sure what's meant to happen with sales to UK residents.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a Duofold Mandarin Yellow at the airport waiting for me to do the customs clearances. I had completely forgotten the consequences of Brexit before pulling the trigger and now I am about to find it the hard way. Beaurocracy, fees and duties to get the merchandise, losing time, unnecessary paperwork. At least I will now remember to unfavor my UK based eBay sellers. I’m sure that a solution will be worked out soon.

Hysterically Historically speaking, during the period when Britain was Great, it was not a member of the non-existent EU. "There is a tide in the affairs of men".

Toodles!

Add lightness and simplicate.

I have also encountered the same issue. Have ordered a couple of pens from ebay-UK but nothing yet. And this is after paying sky-high postage.

For those of you who are based in Europe, could you recommend local European vendors? Are there similar marketplaces? I noticed that Ebay in Spain doesn't have much to offer.

Thanks a million.

Technically/geographically the UK is still in Europe.

As to EU Vendors:

Depends what you’re looking for.
chemapen from Spain has a good collection, not to many specialties but mostly “casual” pens

Um, now probably isn't the best time to declare Britain Great again. Lol.

This.

Britain is a nation that single handedly turned the tide of a war. Summer 1940, the Battle of Britain. Hitler thought he'd walk into the Houses of Parliament. We thought different. And we won.

Engaging in schoolyard "I'm not friends with you any more" nonsense in a manner that will have knock-on effects for the economy and our ongoing relaitonships with our geographical neighbours for decades to come?

Stuff offshore wind farms. We could power the nation by hooking a dynamo up to Winston Churchilll spinning in his grave.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
