Akkerman Ijzer Galnoten #10 (Iron Gall)

I was finally able to get my hands on sample of Akkerman #10 yesterday.

Flow: moderate/wet especially for an iron gall ink

Feathering/bleed: some, but mainly on cheap paper

Saturation: moderate

Color: starts as a deep blue and oxidizes to a dark black; similar if not darker than Diamine Registrar's

Water resistance: 4/5

Nice review of a good IG ink. Try it out with a B or BB or even broader nib. Can take up to 48 h to really darken. Biggest advantage I've experienced is that it is (likely) the least driest of all (good) blue-black IGs. Registrars was the driest, followed by ESSRI.

Life is too short to drink bad wine (Goethe)

I will try to do a comparison with KWZ Blue Black. My sense is that the KWZ leans a bit more purple than Akkerman. I think it is closer to the Blue #1 or Diamine Registrar's.

   Hi,

thanks for your great review.

It's a fantastic ink and so is the bottle!

Mine looks and feels the same as Diamine's Registrar's.

I would say it is drier than ESSRI, second to a "Bible Ink" I have - but can't proof that by a measurement.

Best wishes

Jens

I was under the impression that it was wetter than Diamine. I have not tried it in a dry pen yet though.

Hi Bokaba,

I don't doubt Your impression. Mine is as subjective. It's not the first time this ink or DRI is described wet on this forum.

At school lab we had glas test capillars that could prove our observations, but none at hands now...

Best wishes

Jens

Any chance you know of a supplier of this ink to the United States? Every place I've looked is out of stock.

From what I understand, due to the pandemic, Akkerman has not been able to get their bottles manufactured for quite some time.

As of 2021-03-28, the Akkerman shop says they have bottles again! I don't really want to pay more for shipping than the ink, so I'm still waiting for it to make it to US distributors.

Since I couldn't be bothered to wait, I ended up grabbing a sample from Anderson. Definitely feels more smooth than Salix, and photos won't convey how much lighter it is when the ink is laid down. I haven't put down a full ink review page myself, but my jottings look more blue-grey than Salix's blue-black.

But I heartily support a comparison review with KWZ IGs!

I hear you. I just checked though, with shipping from Europe (assuming outside Europe as they charge VAT for EU countries) it is about $35. US dealers charge $30 plus shipping, so it is probably about the same.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
