Improvised Pen Rests ? Trays. Anything 'Odd' Used ?

Pen Nut

Recommended Posts

Got a few pen rests, Herbin is a nice one, but often end up using something that was never intended for pens. My pen storage case actually started off as a cigar item but stores numerous pens of all sizes. Anyway back to rests & trays, here is something I have used for a while. It is actually out of 1987 Rolls-Royce and it sits in between the driver and front seat passenger, it is basically an oddment tray for small change, keys, glasses etc but serves well in its current role.

Does anyone else use anything that start off as a completely non pen item to rest or place their pens in ?

I made one out of dried bamboo one afternoon from the bamboo I grow. Used non-slip material underneath. It looked good but took up a lot of room on my desk. Now I use vertical holders and the bamboo one for display elsewhere.

Inked up pens in rotation live in a metal canister that used to hold hot chocolate mix.

I have a few of the small Pelikan pen stands (gold, white, and -- finally -- got , but mostly don't use them.

I had considered getting chopstick rests, but couldn't find them anyplace -- even at some of the area's Oriental groceries.

Another one that gets occasional use, anyone recognise what it is / was ? My wet area of Lancashire in the North of England may give out a clue. I like the fact that it quickly doubles into a 'horror movie' type of weapon for any potential 'pen borrowers' that prowl around :-)

My pen holder is a fancy antique cup, two of them with lots of gawdy gold. That said, spoon rests come in a variety of colors and materials. Several are listed on eBay.

Shuttle. In my part of the South weaving once was big business.

That's my thought as well.

I would have said weaving shuttle as well -- except for that metal spike sticking out.  So now I'm wondering if it's some sort of surveyors' equipment.

I have a couple of different things. A snippet of pen trays from go pens for 3 pens, a leather pen stand sent to me by a fellow FPN'r that holds two (and the holes are the perfect size for sample vials). A small Pelikan pen rest on it's way... I'm sure there are other things other than a mug that may or may not have been originally designed for pens too.

I was thinking that the photo posted by TheOtherBart looked like one of those hair comb clips.  Something off a motorcycled engine... who knew....

or an old trivet/plate warmer/hot plate holder

Also wine corks cut in half lengthwise and glued onto a surface side by side, in two columns spaced a pen-length apart. For more bang from your cork buck cut lengthwise and widthwise, so one cork makes for a single pen slot. (Make sense? If you're into this but need a visual lemme know and I'll set something up).

I'm not affiliated with ANY of the brands/retailers/shops/ebay sellers/whatever I mention or recommend. If that ever changes, I will let you know :)

Yes that's an interesting idea. Somewhere I have a very old wet razor stand which may now have an additional use.....

Just make sure you use a plastic stand as I am afraid a metal one could scratch the pens.

Yes, of course.  Dare us use an original or replica, Victorian or French pewter or other m metal pen holder lest we scratch a pen.

I make no apologies for the intended sarcasm of my reply to what I believe to be a ludicrous statement.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
