Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-budo

This is review #60 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Easy cleaning with plain water.  An extra flush or two because it's in the red family and those colors tend to take a little more, but no hints of staining and nothing needed beyond straight flushing.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

I've liked how this looks coming out of my Pilot Decimo, F nib (a Japanese F is close to a European EF, right? ;)).

Thanks for the review.

Yes.  And it looks great even out of a Japanese EF (European EEF?)

You're welcome!  And yeah, this is just a fabulous ink.  Great for regular writing or for markup.

This ink wasn't on my radar. I received a 50ml bottle from a Japanese vendor as a gift along with a pen I had purchased. A lively bright, wet shading ink that has been in my 146 EF for six months

Add lightness and simplicate.

Ah the staple ink for demonstrators (at least to me).

Thanks for review.

Ah, yes, that would look very nice in something like an Eco.

You're welcome! :)

Lucky you!  :)  It really is an excellent ink for EFs because of how well the color holds up in such a fine line, and how wet and lubricated it is.

Great review, Liz. Not my cup of tea... but Q might like it to paint the toes of the sphinx out of spite ;)

Thanks for the review!  Yup, I have this one.  I don't use it often, but it's a pretty color and well-behaved for its hue.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

You're welcome!  I think all the Iroshizuku are well-behaved - they're a great product line.

And another +1 from me - one of my absolute favourites. It would be rare for me to not have it in at least one pen at any given time.

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 315µm.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
