Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Kaweco Summer Purple

This is review #59 in my series.  Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Slightly red-leaning purple.  The cameras didn't really like it, but the zoom image looks quite close to me.

Quick and easy cleaning with plain water.

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

This really looks nice to look at. Great job Liz :)

I had a cartridge version of this ink. I found the flow not the best, it often dried up and skipped ironically in a wet Kaweco! but the colour was lovely and it had some water resistance. Glad it worked well for you...

Are you sure it was Quintus who was pushing the sphinx's toe or was it Courgette his apprentice? ;)

Nice one!  Not as dusky as some other reviews have shown it.  Maybe the EF nib keeps the gray (grey?) at bay.

Courgette has yet to make it outside your imagination. :)  Sorry, but apparently my brain is having a hard time animating a zucchini.  (Tomorrow, however, we will be peeling and shredding zucchini, then baking them in loaves of zucchini bread. :P )

Thanks.  Yeah, I wouldn't call it dusky, just not ridiculously bright. :)  After the review, I put the cartridge into my Karas Kustoms Fountain K Mini, and though it's an EF nib, it's a whole lot fatter than the nib used for the reviews, and it was still a nice purple, not dusky.  Even the swatch looks pretty normal / non-dusky.  Of course, these things are pretty subjective.  Anywho, I think it's a nice, normal purple that leans to the red side rather than the blue.

One of my first purples :)

Still liked a lot.

Name switched from Aubergine to Summer purple at some point.

With Courgette in the mix... 😉

:D Summer Purple seems like a better name to me - it's not dark enough for Aubergine.

Here's the line width measurement. The line is one of those used for dry time.  Magnification is 100x.  The grid is 100x100µm.  The scale is 330µm, with eleven divisions of 30µm each.  The line width for this ink is roughly 275µm.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
