Home made Montblanc British Racing Green

I know this is one of those "mythical" inks that everyone talks about, but the folks with bottles of it understandably guard them jealously.

A while back, I came across a home-made formula for it on another forum( https://fpgeeks.com/forum/showthread.php/18823-Who-wants-to-make-their-own-Montblanc-Racing-Green-ink?highlight=racing+green If that's permitted here) that looked promising.

The basic formula is 4.2 parts MB Golden Yellow, 4.0 parts MB Royal Blue, and .8 parts Mystery Black.

I decided to try my hand at making some up. I don't have a bottle of Mystery Black, but used an old "round" bottle of just plain MB black I had. The Royal Blue came is a few years old, and in one of the old-style blue/black boxes with the dark labels. The Golden Yellow of course is recent, and one of the flaws in this is who knows how long Golden Yellow will remain available.

In any case, I've never used/seen in person the original, but a quick test looked convincing. I just used mL quantities of the above, in an old empty Pelikan bottle(is that heresy?) measured with syringes.

What do you folks think?

Good evening,

Nice mix, thank you.

Yes indeed it seems very close to the original.

Another mix with my unused inks.

  • Noodler's Zhivago 26%
  • Graff von Faber Castell Olive green 66%
  • Noodler's Old Manhattan black 2%
  • Noodler's Air-Corp Blue-Black 6%

This mixture is very slightly greener than the original.

Hmm... I have three out of those four. Only one missing is the olive green, but I have a host of other greens. One should do the trick.

that may help you to find a substitute for GvFC Olive

Just give me the Parker 51s and nobody needs to get hurt.

I do have a bottle of the MB Racing Green around here somewhere.

There is a modern version:

It is really quite close. There is a topic around FPN somewhere . . . .

The links on this one are still working. You can get a good idea of what MB Racing Green looked like.

Diamine Green/Black is close, as is Cult Pens Diamine Deep Dark Green.

Keep up the good work. Who knows Montblanc may bring it back in some form?

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Very expensive though if you include shipping...

@bunnspecial you seem to have made a good copy there. :) Maybe there wouldn't be too much difference if you had to use a different yellow.

I paid way less than this for a real bottle of BRG a few weeks ago - that's a ridiculous price for a Diamine ink.

Selling three bottles can send your kid to Harvard.

2 Bottles to Yale.

MB Racing Green was once the worlds most hated ink, then with in weeks of it being discontinued became the most beloved.

And I had it in my hand, but as noobie was after only the ink bottle, all the advice said, throw all MB inks away.

(All things but the ink bottle were much hated 12 years ago when I came on the com. )

I didn't understand neither murky nor shading. In I was going to throw it away, I might as well try a brown....ok, so Sepia is not brown...is for a noobie.

I liked the  discontinued 12 E Sepia, even spent 1/3 more, E-19 on a second bottle, that soon will be cracked.

Someone put up a great thread with some 30-40 murky green inks. The much too late Ah HA moment where MB Racing Green was 'explained' vs a world of murky.

Well by then I did like shading inks....

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
