Authentic?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone can tell if these are really Mabie Todd? You might need to zoom in, should be four pens. I don’t have them, they are for sale. The maroon/ish pen’s swan kind of looks like a duck and there isn’t a hyphen between self-filler, and the gray pen has an imprint I’m not familiar with at all, but my knowledge is limited. Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert on this so you should really wait for a reply on some one who know. To me they all looks ok. only pen I haven't seen before is the last one. I'm assuming its from the biro-swan period ? If you can note down their model numbers, that might also help to id them.

I'm sure they're fine.  The swan image changed a lot over the years.  It would be impossible for a forger to cover his costs in creating everyday pens of this vintage so it just doesn't happen.

I’m not too familiar with the biro-swan period. The numbers starting from the top blue one look to be 3120, 6160, and 3150. I don’t see a number on the grey one.

A forger would probably concentrate on Mont Blancs, which are both expensive and somewhat standardized. My dad collected Chinese porcelain, and he ended up with a lot of fakes because he neglected to learn to distinguish what an expert on The Antiques Roadshow described as "250 shades of white."

Those numbers are correct for the respective colours.  The colour of the section on the blue pen is interesting.  I don't say it's wrong but I've never seen that combination before.

Thanks. I didn’t win the auction, but good information nonetheless.

They seems to be authentic and as I guess these pens seems to be the last line of Swan Mabie Todd Co. This could be the end line just before they stopped any of their products.

All the other experts on Swan will assure it too. The style and the logos are near authentic.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
