Extra Fine Nib Ink Review: Noodler's Blue Ghost

This is review #53 in my series. Here's the YouTube video:

Post-recording notes: Sorry for poor video / images. I did two takes - my equipment just doesn't like this ink. :(

Zoom is from my first attempt - the video of that wasn't readable so I did a second video. The screenshot is from the second video.

Cleaning: Heaven knows, I mean, unless you shine UV light on your pen, you'd never know it was ever there... OK, just kidding (I checked with a UV light): Cleaning was easy everywhere except that little part of my section where normal flushing can't seem to reach. A trip through the sonicator got rid of it, but I think a simple flush would be just fine for normal use (not doing reviews and not obsessive about getting rid of every trace).

And here is a screen of the final result, for those not interested in the video:

Woohoo! Thanks for that. Heroic effort!

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Gladly! (Well, glad that it's over, anyway!) And thank you!

Also, for anyone interested, these UV lights are insufficient or the wrong design, or for some reason not good for filming this ink. (I had one on the left and one on the right of the page.) I don't know if I needed more wattage or maybe strip lights that would cover a wider area more evenly (though that would be hard with an overhead camera) or maybe floods or what, but these just didn't work very well for filming. (One alone was fine for seeing, but didn't cover a very large area.)

Meanwhile, I see you adopted a new avatar - what was its name again? Something about an upset penguin, as I recall. :)

Koala is mad that its head got transplanted onto a penguin.

Whatever it is that you put in the water, please stop. :P Black Lights?!! Did you put Peter Max posters too?

Add lightness and simplicate.

The water is perfectly safe. Nothing to fear. Drink deeply. Ignore the slight aftertaste. :) No, no Peter Max posters, just a couple of now-useless UV lights.

I'll admit that I accidentally bought a 4 oz. bottle of Blue Ghost, back when Birmingham Pens still had their B&M store, (forgetting that I had an unopened 3 oz. bottle of it already... :headsmack:).

I used to use the ink for my password notebook, but that's gone walkabout. But it gets relegated to a Charlie eyedropper, just to be on the safe side.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Now we know what sound a ghost makes.

Yes, I had a sample of this ink.

Brave review, thanks.

 (Same sounds as helicopters and muffler-less cars owned by young men who think a noisy car makes them cool.)

The brave part was seeing my carpet under UV light! :yikes:

You're welcome!

:D Perhaps an inventory to keep with you is in order...

Hopefully your missing notebook was never after exposed to UV light (while someone was looking at it)... I don't think Blue Ghost is any more dangerous than any other Noodler's bulletproof ink. And as far as I could tell, I got it all out. Also, I've read that it's safe for mixing, so even if some is left over, it should be OK.

Heroic effort both ways... My eyes are aching... :yikes:

I was afraid that I would miss an episode, of Quintus' adventures....

So, Quintus hired a ghost or ghost writer? I thought he was just about to start his adventures..... :P

On a more serious note, the esteemed amberleadavis uses it often to render water loving inks, water repellant..... I was planning at what time to mix it with Apache Sunset....

:) Thank you, and I apologize! :D This is not the ink I would recommend for writing a novel. Pretty sure that much exposure to UV lights would seriously mess up one's eyes.

I'm sure you won't miss any - there's an easy way to search for them, after all. And perhaps not all the episodes are related in chronological order. ;)

That would be one eye-searing Sunset! :yikes: I imagine the other ink will still wash away with water, though. It would be very interesting if Blue Ghost actually made the other dye bond to paper, though.

And yet the poor ghost/ghost writer wrote one using that same ink ;)

Then this is the beginning: As Quintus sat with his new apprentice [/background] Lee's Ef,, he thought it would be time, to dictate his adventurous life......so that she could follow his mighty steps.....

The beauty is that it wouldn't change the colour..... It purportedly make it water resistance......or maybe the Blue Ghost part remains and I can read Quintus, memoire if they are washed away.... :)

I suspect the latter - only Blue Ghost remains.

My sister gave me a whole bottle of this last year. Why anybody needs 3oz is beyond me. She also included a 6-pack of Jinhao Shark pens, which is the only thing I put this ink into. Now whenever I send a card or letter to anybody in her family I feel obligated to ink up shark pen and write hidden messages for my nephew. That was fun for a while.

I filled a couple of cheap translucent Daiso-Hauser fountain pens (but I had to 'sacrifice' a couple of Nemosine converters, since these pens cannot be eyedropper-filled) with Noodler's Blue Ghost and gave them my wife's 'nieces' — daughters of a close family friend — to let them wreak havoc all over the place at home, haha, but I certainly am not going to be writing to them myself in this ink!

My sister gave me a whole bottle of this last year. Why anybody needs 3oz is beyond me.

The family friend told us the girls are still drawing all over the walls and their desks with it, weeks after we last saw them and gave them the gifts, and she did ask me, "So what happens when the pens run dry? Can they bring the pens back to Uncle Dill for refilling?" No, but they can have the (>95%) remainder of my bottle next time I see them.

I think what's left of my tiny bottle of Tramol Turritopsis ink will do me.

Wow

That was a lot of work for that review! Always was curious on that ink, guess it would be great for someone trying to keep their diary secret

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
