Which Inks Are Filling Your Pens Right Now?

RJS

Recommended Posts

Which inks are in your pens this very minute? I've been playing around with pen/ink combos this week, and I have 14 pens filled with 12 different inks right now, mostly friendly inks in more awkward pens. Typically I just have just two blues (or blue blacks), a dark red, and a green, in use at any one time.

This evening I have...

Blacks:

1. Herbin Perle Noire

Blues:

2. Visconti Blue

3. Waterman Serenity Blue

4. Monteverde Horizon Blue

Blue Blacks:

5. Pilot BB

6. Edelstein Tanzanite

Dark Reds:

7. Diamine Syrah

8. Diamine Deep Dark Red

9. Diamine Oxblood

Purples:

10. Sailor Shikiori Shigure

Greens:

11. Diamine Woodland Green

12. Montblanc Irish Green

Edit: I didn't write the full name of the Sailor ink initially.

Do you follow this thread?

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/230980-which-inks-are-you-using-today/

The topic doesn't exactly correspond to your question, insofar as one can have a pen inked and not use it on a given day, but in case you haven't discovered it yet, it might be of interest to you.

To answer your question, today I have four pens inked and have used each of them. The inks with which they are filled are Sailor Shigure, Montblanc Lavender Purple, Sailor Kobe Taisanji Yellow, and Pilot Black.

I've only got:

  • Lie de Thé in my Lamy Al-Star, EF
  • Sailor Seiboku in my Pilot Stargazer, F
  • (in about 30 minutes) Pilot Blue in my Pilot Penmanship, EF

Orange means not in use; white, yellow or red means one or more pens in my household is filled with the ink in that row. According to the spreadsheet, 146 inks are in use in some 170 pens, although some pens may have dried out in the meantime and shouldn't count.

A recent spate of "resurrecting" pens I haven't used in a while as well as buying several new ones has lead me to realize it can be dangerous for me to have too many inked at one time. I do well with two-one as a main writer with a "tame" color(usually B-B, sometimes blue) and one in an "off" color for mark-up purposes. I can sometimes make a case for a 3rd, but that's about where I should stop. Right now,

MB 146 w/Midnight Blue(IG)-this pen has been nearly constantly inked when I got it, although more recently usually with Pelikan 4001 B-B since I'm getting very low on IG Midnight Blue(I had some reasons this past weekend to want my old favorite ink in it).

Conklin All American with a Waterman Blue cartridge(one of the first cartridges I've used in a while)

Lamy Safari w/Baystate Blue

Lamy Studio Palladium with Lamy Blue(cartridge)

Lamy 2000, Black Swan in Australian Rose

Pelikan M400 Edelstein Sapphire

Pilot VP Red-Black

Pilot CH92 Marine Green

Pilot Falcon Lexington Gray

I THINK that's it for now, and I'm not inking another pen until I run these out.

Pelikan blue, aaaaand.... Pelikan blue. It's a wonderful rut. I'm a great disappointment to our pen ink club.

Yes, it's true. We make fun of RonZ on a regular basis. Because when Ron gets wild and crazy? He uses 4001 Brilliant Black....

As for me?

KWZI Turquoise -- Pilot Metropolitan, stub nib.

Ferris wheel Press Tanzanite Sky -- Cross Solo, F nib.

Noodler's Baltimore Canyon -- TWSBI 580-AL, B nib.

(diluted) Kyo-no-Oto Sakuranezumi -- Sailor Pro-Gear Slim, zoom nib.

vintage Quink Microfilm Black -- Parker Vacumatic, F nib.

Noodler's Harold's Hearse -- Parker Vector, M nib.

J Herbin Violette Pensee -- Parker 61, M nib

Diamine Pelham Blue Burst Lamy Safari, F nib.

Additionally, I just finished up a fill of Akkerman Laan van Oost Indigo, in the Pelikan M600, EF nib, this morning. There are some other pens that I will not mention, that need to be flushed out because they've sat for too long.

Grey - Stipula Fading Grey

Black - Iro Take-sumi

Blue-black - Stipula Dark Blue, Diamine 1864

Blue - Stipula Light Blue, MV Sapphire, Sailor Yomogi

Brown - Iro Yama-guri

Green - Stipula Musk Green, Diamine Dark Forest

Teal - Lamy Petrol

Orange - Lamy Coral

Purple - Stipula Purple, Cross Violet

So, currently 14 pens/inks that I use regularly (plus Pinkly! when I'm in the mood)

2 Iro

2 Lamy

2 Diamine

1 ea Sailor, Cross and MV (+ 1 Levenger)

5 Stipula

I'm thinking of swapping out the Dark Forest for Maccasar, which would still leave me with 2 Diamines.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Time cut back, WAY too any pens inked:

  1. Diamine Presidential Blue in a Pelikan M600; F
  2. Iroshizuku Yama-guri in an Edison Premier; M
  3. Diamine Ancient Copper in a Kaweco Supra Brass; EF
  4. Fritz Schimpf Sundowner in an Edison Herald; M
  5. Edelstein Moonstone in an Edison Brockton; M
  6. Edelstein Smoky Quartz in an M215; I
  7. 4001 Brilliant Brown in an M205; F
  8. Waterman Serenity Blue (cartridge) in a Pelkano
  9. Lamy Blue (cartridge) in a Lamy Studio; F
  10. Lamy Turquoise in a Lamy Safari; M
  11. Edelstein Adventurine in a Lamy Studio; F
  12. 4001 Violet in an M600; B
  13. Iroshizuku Tsukushi in an M800; M
  14. 4001 Brilliant Black in an M205; F
  15. Edelstein Olivine in an M205; EF

I have been writing a lot lately, but not enough to empty so many pens in a reasonable amount of time (few months). My problem is when I want to use a particular ink, I like to have it ready to go, so I tend to ink a lot of pens. The downside is of course potential for dry-outs, which make for cleaning and re-inking headaches.

I need to focus.

Well, I filled the pen with distilled water this morning, planning to flush it. But when I tried it, the ink was still dark enough to be legible, even diluted. So all is not lost....

OMG. Now I'm going to have to name a pen "Horatio", aren't I?

ETA: Add Iroshizuku Yama-guri to the list, as the inaugural ink for the new purple Pilot Falcon, which came yesterday. No, not naming that pen "Horatio". It got nicknamed "Francesca". Brownie points for guessing why....

Yama-guri is one of my very favorite inks. It was my first Iroshizuku, and definitely my favorite brown.

Horatio sounds like a good name for a pen.

Four inks are currently in use.

The Aqua M205 F is, as always, filled with Iro Ku-Jaku diluted ~ 4:1, to write billets-doux to the delightful woman who not only married me, but gave me them both.

I have a Hero 616 filled with Montblanc Mystery Black.

My first Pen of a Lifetime, my blue swirl M200 F, is currently loaded with an ink I didn't even know existed before Amber sent me a sample: Montblanc Dark Blue.

And I have an indigo FPR Himalaya V2 M loaded with my bête noire of inks, Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin. This pen is most certainly able to recover from whatever the BBM may do to it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
