Pelikan Pelikano, A Nib: Review

Recommended Posts

Amberlea and the Inksters recently offered a few pens and inks via a generous PIF. Yesterday I received a great package, including an orange Pelikan Pelikano with an "A" nib. My review is below.

(My scanner is wonky and the resolution of photos I take/upload is poor on FPN. The photo of the pen itself is from Jetpens.com.)

I had one, some years ago. I think it was the first model with the new nib, longer and bigger than the nib of the previous Pelikano. I've found it quite fragile: after some months of usage the small plastic parts on the left and on the right of the nib cracked and the nib could not stay put in its place. And my hand is not particularly heavy. Also the clip in plastic on a metal cap was fragile.

I don't know if this particular model was successful, I haven't seen one in a shop since decades.

The more recent Pelikanos have the same nib but the section is thicker and quite robust.

I won at a live auction, a '70's limited edition Pelikano; Pen Collection, the dolphin. It was part of a four Pelikan pen lot. There are some 6 or 8 pens in that Pen Collection.

Having absolutely no idea about Pelikano's, thought it might be rare.....could be it is. But it's a bonus of the lot. Having looked in a few Pelikan blogs, there is more to the Pelikano than I thought.

I was surprised it had a regular flex nib, on second thought it is a semi-nail nib***, a 2 X tine spread.

in I was under the impression Pelikano's had nail nibs. (I haven't inked it yet...I did ink the other three, but all in all I have some 20 pens inked....3 more than normal.)

They had a series of yearly limited Edition Pelikano's in that era, it could be that they put a slightly softer nib on them.....than the regular Pelikano's.

***Like a P-75 or the modern 400/600. (The semi-vintage ('82-97) 400/600 were regular flex.)

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

This pen was a gift from another FPNer who has graciously allowed me to share her pens as she is downsizing. I'm actually a fan of the Pelikano nibs, but not a fan of the caps that BROKE. I think this one is a lovely pen.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

What a beauty! I have a red one that saw some use and unopened pink and purple ones. I found that the cap didn't seal tiightly (unlike the 460s) causing it to dry out if not used every day. That's why I didn't buy any more, though I would have loved getting the orange and green ones.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
