~ The Expressive continues to write wonderfully for me.

Easy to use, smooth, and trouble-free.

A fountain pen highlight of 2020.

Sir, so great to know that you are enjoying this pen! Just out of curiosity can you please tell me from experience whether this nib is similar in width to B or BB nib? I understand each nib is different as they are hand made.

Thank you for your kind words.

I'm unsure how the nib compares in width.

There are indeed B and BB nibs on my writing desk, but I lack the discernment to tell width differences.

The Expressive's salient feature isn't about width as much as it is about tensile strength and overall configuration.

It's a joy for sketching and writing because of the interaction of the factors mentioned above, rather than purely the nib width.

I apologize for not having a more definitive reply to your reasonable question.

I just discovered this pen. I purchased my 149 Calligraphy from Fritz-Schimpf and I saw this pen on their website. Now I have to start saving for another pen. This one appears to be great. Thanks to everyone for sharing their photos and thoughts.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

~ A friend in South Africa, two friends in Japan and another friend in Switzerland are all writing with The Expressive.

Two of them received their copies of The Expressive as highly appreciated gifts.

My own experience has been that higher grades of writing paper bring out the finest qualities of The Expressive.

There's no surprise in that. Fritz Schimpf's Feinpost paper is an excellent choice.

It is good to hear from other fans of the FS Feinpost paper. I tried it first a couple of years ago, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. It is a lovely all-purpose paper. I order larger batches every time and still seem to run out often.

The FS Leinen is also an interesting paper and handles ink in all flow ranges very well, but the surface texture maybe require some getting used to.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
