Aurora Optima: Arguably The Best Modern Italian Pen, Especially If You Use Pens For Writing.

Thanks for the tips!

I don't mind the size. It's true that the Platinum Century is longer (judging by measurements found online) but in spite of being a tall man with consequently largish hands, curiously I don't have a problem with shorter pens. For example, I have a Kaweco Sport and I find it comfortable in the hand, even unposted, and I like its pocketability (I don't use it much because the nib has given me countless problems, but that's a different story).

Regarding toothy nibs, the Platinum nibs also tend to have feedback (the sound is very similar to writing with a pencil) and I'm fine with them. It depends a bit on the day, sometimes I prefer a smooth nib and then I use a TWSBI or ASA pen with JoWo nibs, which (at least mine) are smooth like sliding on ice. And other days I'd rather use the Platinum. It also depends on the paper I'm using. So it's probably not going to be a problem either.

The newest addition to my Aurora Optima collection is the 365 Gialla. There are many beautiful Italian pens but in my opinion the whisper thin acrylic and attention to detail of Aurora pens is unsurpassed. Some random close-ups:

No pics yet as I've only just taken the plunge. Valentina's had a beautiful Blue/Green Auruloide up that really caught my eye but I was put off by the price. Today I was on ebay and came across the Gailla and that's all it took. Yurizh57 and Calabria's photos convince me I made a good choice.

In my search I had also came across a Bordeaux Mini and, well, Xmas is coming, I thought, heck, why not.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
