Do you have a preference for a J model or a Dollar B and why?

I prefer the J series pens. I have mostly J and SJ pens, with a couple of LJs, and few Toaster-top Trannies. I don't like the look of the clip on the Dollar pens. Just a personal preference -- a friend of mine (FPN member Uncle Red) once told me he actually liked the Dollar pens better, though.

Another personal preference is that I don't like the look of the Icicles, and much prefer the mackerel tabby celluloid models.

Anything from 1955 back. I've got a couple Dollar pens in HBR, one with a early circa '32 pinched clip and the later '38 type.

I also prefer the J's. Truly workhorse pens that are beautiful and easy to service.

Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? I prefer the J series pens because of the looks. Among the J series I like the LJs for their lesser girth and the Transitionals for their barrel end without a jewel best.

I prefer the Dollar B to the J. And I also prefer the transitional J to the double jewel J.

For that matter, I probably prefer the Deluxe LK and the A-101 to a J. But then again, I'm not always normal.

I wonder why this topic came up today? :D

On that note, I prefer the M2 to all of the other Esterbrooks.

Because I'm wondering if you also have a nice blue in the Dollar B or the J transitional in your stash?

I don't care for the metal cap on the rather light plastic barrel, and I think the plastic is softer than in the J.

I also like the barrel end without the jewel end on both the Dollar and the Tranny.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
