In Praise Of Andre Mora Of Mora Stylos

I purchased a beautiful Oldwin pen in Tibaldi Impero celluloid from Andre Mora at the LA Pen Show earlier this year. Once home, I found that the pen had a minor issue that prevented it from writing the way I wanted. I wrote to Monsieur Mora and he immediately responded and requested I return the pen to him for corrective action.

I did so and was stunned when the pen returned to me in less than 14 days with a nice hand written note saying that Monsieur Mora had changed the feed and made sure the pen wrote well. Did it ever! I'm in love all over again - even more than the day I bought it!

14 days despite two way travel between Ohio, USA and Paris, France, two Customs agencies, etc. That is what I call REAL customer service! I am already looking forward to my next original Oldwin pen.

I'll contrast that with a different pen manufacturer I will leave unnamed. I ordered one of his very expensive Limited Edition pens at the LA Show in February, 2019 with expected delivery later that year. I paid a 50% deposit. In December I requested an update and was told March or April 2020. In April I requested an update and was told he wasn't able to make any promise of delivery. My subsequent email requests in July and August went unanswered. Now it is September, I have paid a deposit of well over $1000, have no promise of delivery, and can't even get a response.

Fortunately, some pen makers like Andre Mora provide excellent customer service. Kudos and my thanks to Monsieur Mora!

$1,000+ deposit and no communication? Ask for your money back.

Of course I did. That is when he stopped responding. Can't wait till I see him face to face at a pen show!

Paypal or credit card? Try to get your money back through them? Or is it too late?

I appreciate the suggestion. I did pursue it through the credit card company, but they said it is too late. I appealed it, but got the same answer.

Little to do but wait for the pen to ultimately be delivered. I’m sure it will be eventually, but of course I will never again feel about this brand the way I have in the past. And you can count how many of his pens I will buy again with no fingers.

I had a similar worrying experience with an expensive limited edition. I placed my order and paid the deposit at the 2018 DC Pen Show. It arrived well over 12 months later. But it did arrive. I sent a regular stream of emails to make it clear that I was expecting a pen at the end of all this and we managed to keep the correspondence cordial. Whether that made any difference, I cannot tell, but it may still work out for you and I hope it does.

I ordered my Oldwin about 3 years ago from Andre and was very pleased with his customer service.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
