A Jinhao 992 Smoke filled with R&K SketchInk Lilly for writing and for drawing a grey Jinhao 51a with a hooded art/fude nib inked with Diamine Earl Grey.

Yes, it's a grey day - my mood, the skies, my clothing, my pens and inks as well.

Will work for pens...

How have you found the 12k nib to differ with steel version?

Wing Sung 601 Flighter version with Chrome trim, a F nib, and loaded with Pelikan Royal Blue. Lovely pen, albeit I am not sure that I like it better than the plastic version.

i have them all the steel ,various Steel fude / calligrapy and all of 10K, 12K, and 14K .. yes thee is a difference between the steel and the gold , the 12K is both smoother and more cushioned with a slight softness to it vs the steel, the 14K is actually more akin to the steel ( harder than 12K ) but give a better cushioned writing feel , the 10K is the softest and give a bouncy kind of softness vs a cushioned one , all of the gold nib exhibit smoothness that I would say almost the same between the three

That stated, they are hooded nib, and the are pretty structurally sound with very little free tine ( after the hood ) so really am not expecting anything really significant there regarding

Chinese made, but English branded, a blue Helix metal with a medium nib filled with a Diamine Sapphire Blue cartridge just because it is on my desk and I needed to write a shopping list.

If it wasn't for that ink window, I would have bought this pen.... however, I am interested to know about your experience with the vacumatic filling system....

well for all the color options for all 601 variant ; there is always both a windowed and solid ( no window ) version so you might want to check .. and as for the vacumetic mechanism ... well I had both , the original/ early batches that use the bladder / diagram ; and the piston pump , both function as they should but indeed the piston pump is working with less effort , drawing ink more efficient, & quick. But also magnitude easier to service , CLA ( Clean, Lube, adjust ) and AFAIC , this piston pump vacumetic filling is currently the easiest and most user friendly filling mechanism that any fountain pen new offered on the market , you basically just stick the pen into the ink bottle ( one handed ) and just pump the button a few times and then that's it ; it just work and work each and every time .. I've had no issue with them. Jut FYI , the following is my 601A ( Triumph nib ) with a solid no window barrel , both windowed and solid version exist for all colour choices ( except for the all Transparent and the Transparent Blue which clearly had no need for a window anyway )

How well does the Wing Sung 601A resist drying out?

I have a Jinhao 51a, my first ever hooded nib pen, that arrived a few months ago and I am very impressed with it. Not least because it hasn't dried or hard even once in that time. Is the Wing Sung as reliable as that?

Will work for pens...

personally I had no issue with all of the current new production type of pen with this kind of slip on cap, the Jinhao 51a, the Wing Sung 601 series, the Hero 616+, the Kaco Retro so long one remember to cap it properly ; if ever there is issue with the seal its usually with the cap jewel and it can be easily fixed with some silicone grease and a proper fitting

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
