What Chinese Pens Are You Using Today? 2020 + 21

Recommended Posts

Wingsung 234 - said to be from the 1990s.

Caught my eye because of the marble? design and the Sheaffer-like nib.

If you start writing with this nib, it feels first very stiff - but I got quickly used to it.

I like it.

  • 3x PenBBS 494 (Damn, I love this pen)
  • Wing Sung 698
  • No-name Brass hexagon pen (looks identical as Delike Alpha brass (worn out brass color) fountain pen), but nib is switched with a generic F "iridium point(!)" nib which I got 6 of them for $1.

Are the newly made Chinese pens of better quality than the older Chinese pens? Like when was the latest update to machinery equipments at a major Chinese pen company?

As soon as they tell us, we will post the answer here. Please check from time to time.

Hero 737 in black.
This pen is a very positive surprise. Looks good, nib performance optimal.

Price is about $10 at the moment.

Another surprise was the pen bag. Looks like suede, probably isn't but it feels good - much better than any of these little bags I have received until now.

Daiso-Hauser fountain pen with a blue barrel, filled with Hero 234 carbon black ink. Write finely for what is nominally a Medium nib, and very smoothly.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Hong Dian Forest Series in all black, nib size EF/F

This is the first Hong Dian pen, I bought. Actually together with another one.

I am impressed - the quality seems to be very good. Need to use it a little bit more before I can draw a conclusion.

The nib writes on some papers very nicely - on other papers, there is some resistance. But I think, I can get used to that behavior.

Don't expect flex, this nib is stiff.

Still, I am impressed.

Not today but for tomorrow. Just inked it up with Waterman Serenity Blue. A quick test tells me already, I am falling in love with their EF nib.

Model 517S, I think.

A PenBBS long-tail model 267 in Amber is a Cat. The colors of this pen are more beautiful than any of the pictures. It writes smoothly, even with subpar ink (all I could find at first, after moving house). And the little kitty paws on the nib! This was going to be my last PenBBS purchase, but I don't know, I don't know.

These two Wing Sung 3013 pens in my wife's pen cup needed 'fixing', as they wouldn't write even though their ink reservoirs were still >75% full:

I'd say they write smoothly (but not so completely devoid of feedback that the experience is unpleasant or difficult to control) and wetly — such that the Robert Oster Claret and Dark Chocolate inks are barely distinguishable from each other on the page — but their EF nibs aren't noticeably finer than the nominally M nib on the Daiso-Hauser fountain pen.

A newly arrived Jinhao 51a with a fude nib will be my drawing pen for the day. My first pen with a hooded nib. So far I'm impressed.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
