Years ago I already experimented with the idea of a double-sided nib with a big difference in the line width from one side to the other. I achieved this goal with two nibs, which I mounted on top of each other. I grinded the upper nib tip to a big flat sweet spot and polished it super smooth with micromesh.

The result was quite o.k.

After that I published this on FPN, I got flooded with inquiries and messages of people who wanted to buy it. After a short time I got weak an sold the nib unit.

I always regretted this...but I knew that I could repeat the experiment at any time.

So recently, I finally found the time and the leisure to repeat. This time, I even ameliorated the customization: I used a black Pelikan nib under the polised stainless steel nib on top. This way, you can't see the doubled nib at first sight.

I installed the nib unit on a black Pelikan 140 with chromed clip and caplip which matches best as I think.

I have to admit, this sketch isn't extremely creative, but I htink it suits perfectly to show a nib with one side for fine lines, and a second side for BOLD BLACK lines for blackening.

....it's just fun to use and i won't sell this one as quick.

Christof,

What a great sketching pen and what great demos for us readers! By the way, of whom there are many!

Here is a last-minute sketch by Kadir Nelson for the August 27th issue of The New Yorker of Aretha Franklin in this week of her death. The style is a further illustration of what is possible with tight B&W work. This is in pencil. The inspiration is in pen and ink.

Thank yoyu Dick.

I have always been enthusiastic about the illustrations on the cover of the new yorker!

But now, something completely different. Got a new pen:

It's the first Pelikan again, since a quite long time - a Pelikan 101N with short cap top in tortoise pattern to be precise. And it is a welcome addition to my small collection of Tortoise Pelikans:

According to the "Tortoise selection", I took a picture of the "Black stripes selection":

...and....during the last weeks I catched some vintage Caran d'Ache Ecridor pencils and was suprised to learn that there were several sizes existing:

One can learn something every day. But let's see what's next.

Also thank you for the pictures of the CdA Ecridor clutch pencils, I love them too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
