What's Up At Christof's

For what it is worth, in no particular order here are some the things I like best about your thread, or page, or whatever it should be called:

  • The photography. I think you could probably photograph a rock and make it interesting.
  • Your illustrations. I occasionally try to illustrate a design or concept when I am putting together a wood working project, a simple desk shelf or a desk top box. A friend of mine (an architect as a matter of fact) was interested in building a very simple bench for the front porch of his fishing cabin, a place to put on and remove waders. I sent him an idea and an illustration. He said he liked the concept, and the illustration as well,it reminded him of an MC Escher etching.
  • The anecdotal information you often provide with a post, here is an example from some time back: "This is a "MEWA Toolbox" from the 1960's, designed by: Wilhelm Kienzle and manufactured by MEWA, Switzerland..."

The breadth of your interests. You are not just about Pelikan or Lamy, or another specific brand of design. I like it that you often show pens form different manufacturers with similarities.

your display of European pens, many of which I have never heard of. Your thread is always a learning experience for me.

I used to blog, mostly about bicycles and Randonneuring so I have experienced 'publishing anxiety' - that feeling that it has been too long since the last, and a new post is needed. I have no concern or worries about 'when will Christof produce a new post?' I understand that these things are the product of a number of different elements and I am comfortable with the notion that it will come when it comes and no sooner.

Keep up the good work,

Dr. Codfish

Thanks for the photos of the gray Pelikan set and I did not know they existed in other colors other than tortoise, green, and black. Did Pelikan ever make a blue striated FP? Thanks.

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow

Very nice.

The Pelikan on the far right with the swirled color and 2 cap rings, would I guess be pretty rare--I've never seen one before (not that I'm an expert by any means). It looks a bit like a waterman 3 with the 2 cap rings and the swirled body and cap color.

Yes, there were not that many built of these, but still, they exist. So, I wouldn't call it a super rare pen, just uncommon. The color/pattern is called light tortoise and there are existing two versions: one with a single capband, similar to all other 400, and one with two capbands of which I think that it is the older of the two.

ps: I'm still looking for the missing pencils which seems to be much harder to find....

The LAMY Safari has been a pen of special interest to me since I came into pens. But my goal never was to get a complete collection of all colors. My main interest is in the early colors, and the newest ones with textured surface. Nevertheless, I find it interesting to have a chronological overview to all the colors ever made. Since one year, I am member of the very friendly board of the French pen community: stylo-plume.org. Stylo-plume allows to edit original posts for quite a long time. That's why I decided to start there a thread with the goal of collecting pictures of all Safari colors. Have a look at here:
My special thank goes to Rolf Thiel from missing-pen.com who was kind enough to allow me to show his pictures. And of course C. Josef LAMY GmbH for the pictures of their website.

BTW: stylo-plume.org is a very familiar and sympathetic fountain pen community. If you speak or understand a little French, you should make a visit from time to time there.

PS, textured Alpin white, manufactured the same year as the 2007 gloss?

No, I suspect that it is much earlier, because the clip and nib are black and the cap screw is metal, at least on my pen. Unfortunately, the matte white surface is almost impossible to photograph.

Here's a detail shot of the textured Alpin:

...not the best pictures ever, I know. But it's really difficult to catch this color and even the surface.

The textured Alpin is stamped with W. Germany, the glossy one with Germany.

(smacks forehead) Apple Green!

Yes, the: not quite dark enough green (on the scale) to say it's the true secondary color green that fits between Lamy Blue & Yellow.

Have that one and used Diamine Meadow Green ink.

Just missing the three textured, first green, earth red, and white.

Also the red/yellow, white/red internationals.

Christof, your photography is amazing! the texture is visible, thanks again.

Now, something new Pelikan. My newest: a 101N from 1950. Nothing uncommon...

37923550484_9d03a27560_k.jpg

...except the nib: a true EEF!!

EF nibs are easy to find, but EEF are quite uncommon and you won't find them every day. Although its tiny tip size, it writes perfectly smooth on every paper. Not necessary to mention that I like it a lot....

PS: Thanks to V.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
