Christof, I got the pen you sent in perfect order. Yoir packaging was very good and it arrived very quickly. I could not be more pleased. Thank you!

Thank you MisterBoll. It's always a pleasure to see and hear another satisfied customer. Wish you lots of fun with your new vintage Swiss Soennecken. Probably there can't be found to much of these in Georgia...

After a Long time, I finally found the time for pen hunt again. Last Saturday was fleamarket day! Not a bad day at all...

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5473/9116434032_9dea101de4_c.jpg

...a nice bundle of pens...

...nothing spectacular but still nice pens. The nicest without doubt is this Parker "51" in Buckskin Beige:

But there is also a nice black striped Pelikan 400NN, a cute little Osmia, a NOS Lamy 27 and some Waterman's and some of them with flex nibs. Lots of work for me, that's why I have to finish now.

But let's see what's next...

Wow, when I go to the flea market I return fleabitten and pen-less. Great finds!

Although I have pretty busy times at work, I found the time to bring two pens of the bundle back to life. It's always an amazing experience to test write These vintage Waterman's nibs. They are marvellous in most cases.

Well, the appearance of These Waterman's number 3 is rather humble....but the nibs, the nibs are premium class!
This one has a flexible stub nib, which writes very smooth:

The second one has a nib which looks like a factory flexible oblique broad, wich is not a common nib as far as I understand...

Just look how they write!
I do not really collect Waterman's pens, but I really am fond of these nibs! t's a pleasure to write with. I love it.
Now, I'm already working on a dark blue 1940's Waterman's Commando which seems to have a wet noodle like nib.... sigh...

It's a dark blue Waterman's commando with a marvellous flexible fine nib. I really love this!

During the time, I worked on many Pelikans pens from after war period, like Pelikan 140, 400, 400NN and Pelikan 300. These pens are extremely reliable and well designed. But there is one weak spot these pens have in common. One third of all pens I have had in the past had hairline crack in the caps.

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3779/9301597818_9449f1375f_o.png

The main reason for this is how these caps are designed and how the caps have been manufactured.
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5546/9296398833_a976113e38_z.jpg
On the section drawing you can see a metal sleeve at the cap lip, inside of the cap. Ironically, this sleeve was meant to protect the cap of cracks. Actually it’s the reason for these hairlines. Why ?
These caps have been manufactured by injection molding and the metal sleeve has been molded in. So, the thinnest area of the plastic is around the metal sleeve. Slightest shrinkage of the plastic material will develope a hairline at this part of the cap, where the plastic covers the metal sleeve.
Now, these are the facts. The good news is, that these hairlines do not affect functionality of the cap at all. Because of the molded in metal sleeve, the plastic is kind of reinforced in this area and stays stable also in case of a hairline. And because of the seperate inner cap, the cap is tight as it should. These hairlines are more of a cosmetically flaw so to speak.

Great to know, Christof! I do love these 140/300/400s, Great pens!

However, replacing their pistons is another matter though. If they were as simple as the 100/100N...

I never had a problem with these pistons. why do you think it's more complicated?

The mechanics is just plugged. You only have to warm the barrel and pull. I rather see a Problem in getting proper seals...

Christof, you seem to be really technically accurate with your drawings. The only other time I've seen someone draw like this is my father who's a mechanical engineer by profession.

Are you into engineering or design?

That's the problem, I am not good with that. Ha...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
