What Does Engraved Number On Snorkel Mean?

Recommended Posts

I just bought a Sheaffer Snorkel. When I was a kid (long long ago) my mom had a burgundy Snorkel. I found one just like the one she had and bought it. Long story for later.

Anyway, Above the engraving "W. A. Sheaffer Pen Co." is a four digit number "1127." I'm thinking it's a model code or something. Can anyone point me to a decoding source?

There is no known information as to what these numbers are.

Wow. I notice photos of Snorkels usually don't have any numbers. Mysterious.

There is a previous thread about serial numbers on Snorkels at: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/335289-snorkel-admiral-1960/

I have been keeping an eye out for these pens and so far have seen references the following:

There is nothing wrong with tracking these as they come up and, may provide an answer. I don't think the number has anything to do with the model. I would theorize that these numbers were etched on pens that were sent out with employees to track real world use of the pen that could be periodically reported on. As we go through the archives we'll keep an eye out for ledgers that may have such tracking. This isn't remotely the same as the price codes that were found on some pens in the '30's. I'll look and see if I have some marked snorkels.

Congratulations on scoring an exquisite and unique instrument. I'm looking forward to checking it out at the Honolulu Pen Club some day. I have a couple and I'll look for a nib number. But, they are somewhere in the Magic Pen Storage Stuff area and I have not seen the Shaffer pouch in a while. Aloha - Buzzie

By the way, my 1127 is a Valiant. Why would some Burgundy Valiants have a number and some not? What is the meaning of life and why is the sky blue?

Thanks for the update on 1127 ... as we continue to search for the true meaning of life, the universe, and numbers on Sheaffer Snorkels.

Interesting thread. Not sure how I missed it before now.

Of course, I'm now going to be looking at all of my Snorkels to see if there are any numbers on the barrels....

This is a black Sentinel pen --0988--I bought in mint condition. The sac protector has 4 small lugs (no large lug), so it is not an early model. It does not have a ® mark on the nib, which means it's not a very late production pen.
