Parker 51 Special

I finally received this pen the other day, and it didn’t work the first time I inked up some Waterman Mysterious Blue, even after a good flushing (the eBay seller didn’t flush the ink - what is with these people? It happens so often. )

I filled it with water and left the section submerged in water overnight, just in case. No ink in the water the next day. But after a long drying, I decided to give it one more try before considering getting it serviced. With always-perfect Serenity Blue, of course.

Working great now!

It’s even fine enough and dry enough that I can write a whole A5-sized page in my Moleskine Cahier without a bit of bleed — and less show-through than you see on the Rhodia in my photo.

Once again, I apologize for the crappy quality of my photos. In better light, this baby is a burgundy color that’s quite lovely. It's definitely darker than my red P21, and it's not brown. The pen has some light usage wear, but it's in great condition. It's my second 51S, and now that it works, I am thrilled to add it to the collection. (My other 51S is black.)

@carguy - this is the one I mentioned to you, that I was worried about its condition. I also thought it was lost in the mail, but the post office found it two weeks after I filed a report. See also: Two P21s, a P21 Pencil, and two books - 4 packages that were lost on the same day. All finally showed up. I'll photograph the 21s on another day. One of them may be leaky, but it needs further testing.

Is it a 15?

Nope. Even though the nib and feed are clearly of 15/nixy/jotter pedigree.

A couple of additional Duofold Prestige Centennial in Black Chevron finish which were packed off to Parker for nib exchange, are just back with UEF, MI and BI nibs. I seem to have fallen for the Black Chevron, hook line and sinker. The BI nib is luscious :puddle: and the UEF wipes the floor with my M800 EF

Gorgeous pen.

I’ve never seen a rainbow finish other than on a 61 cap. Is this pretty rare?

I think that the rainbow pattern was also applied to the 51's cap. I once saw a picture of what appears to have been one.

According to this, it's very rare, and I've never seen one for sale on ebay: http://www.parker75.com/Reference/Rainbow/Rainbow.htm
