Enjoying Montblanc Pens — Broad, Oblique, Extra Fine, Le & Bespoke 2020-2023

Hi everyone -

I just thought I would let you know that Tom Kellie may not be on FPN for awhile. His international internet has been cut off. The city where Tom lives is in total lockdown because of the coronavirus outbreak. My daughter lives in the same city but they haven't cut her international internet yet.

He asked me to let you know.

Please keep them in your thoughts.

I am also in Shenzhen (guessing that is in the area). It is indeed interesting times.

Most people are staying in their apartments, lowering the possible spread of the virus. The lengths the people and authorities are going to, to limit the risk to everyone is amazing. Shenzhen is a city of 12M and looks like a ghost town.

Most people are surviving on delivery services. This lifeline allows people to stay at home. However it is not easy to use if you are not Chinese. While Tom does appear to be pretty good at Chinese writing, he may like to know about an english delivery service that is running in several major cities: https://store.nogogo.cn

Tom: you appear to be looking after yourself well. However, use the above and butter, milk, pasta, ... gin and tonic, and many other essential food groups are available. You just need to collect them from your apartment complex gate.

If there is anything specialised you need, get in touch, and we may be able to help. Be well.

Don't worry , our prayers are with them . God is kind and will take care.

Thank you so much for your kindness. I would not say that I am worried, but I am concerned. I am confident that the authorities are doing all that they can, and I am encouraged by the international response to help. Yes, let's continue to pray for His intervention.

I passed along your comment to both Tom and my daughter. I know if my email didn't get through, at least she will be able to pass it along. I am still getting his emails, but we don't know how long that will last. My daughter's internet situation is a bit different, so we are hoping that she does not lose her international internet.

Hearing about Tom’s tribulations is like a modern version of Samuel Pepys diary during the plague in London, or Camus’ The Plague.

This is way off topic, but one of the internet games that my daughter got me "hooked" on is called Contagion. While a game, it you understand the progressive spread of disease.

But this is no game and hopefully will not end as The Plague. I am confident that the authorities are doing all that they can and I am grateful to the international response to help.

  • 2 weeks later...

A quick update from our friend, Tom Kellie, who is locked away in CoronavirusLand:

Every day I think of FPN friends, especially in the Montblanc, Pelikan and Inks Forums.
The fountain pens on my writing desk are in daily use. I’m surprised to find that I like Herbin scented inks more with repeated use.
As shopping malls are closed here, the local suppliers of inks, paper and fountain pens are currently unavailable.
My supplies are more than adequate, therefore I’m able to enjoy both sketching and writing.

Tom Kellie is alive and well! He asked me to post this for him.

He says,

"I visited the downtown Shenzhen MixC Montblanc Boutique this afternoon.

They’d reopened two days ago. There were no other customers during my visit.
To my delight, they had a bottle of an ink I’d been seeking — Montblanc James Purdey and Sons Cigar scented ink.
A sales staff member kindly used my camera to take this portrait outside of the boutique."

Thanks for the updates about Tom and your daughter. I hope things continue to go well.

Looking at that picture all I can think of is "The things we do for the right ink".

Excellent news! And what better way to know he is alright than that picture in front of the MB boutique

5Cavaliers, if you get the chance please tell him hello from the ex-Bellevue-ite in Idaho, and let him know he is in our thoughts always.

I wonder when MB will have their own face masks with the logo issued to customers at the boutique? 😉

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
