Black Ink Used In A Mixture

Charles Skinner

A friend gave me a bottle of Noodler's Black American Eel ink as a Christmas gift. -------- I rarely use black inks, and since I really enjoy mixing inks, ----- and since I have many other beautiful ink colors, --- I would like to know what you have done, ---- using black ink as part of a mixture. ---- Thanks in advance. ----- C. There is a thread here for Black Swans in North African Violets that used Heart of Darkness. There is also one with CMYK mixes which have some mixes using black ink. Black in small quantities works well to darken an ink. A little goes a long ways.

since Noodlers Eel inks have somewhat unusual properties I would mix small quantities and let the mix sit for several days to be sure there aren’t any unusual chemical reactions

You could now check this newer thread where Noodler's ink are being used in a mixture

if you want to use black, experimenting for blue-black is quite a nice challenge, it depends on preferences but some people like blue blacks with a slight teal hue, while other prefer more neutral/grey blue blacks. It's tricky mixing, but can be fun.

If you go ahead and try a mix, as Ted suggests above, go easy with the quantity of black, begin with very small amounts added to the starting colour and add very gradually, testing as you go for the desired final color.

this is one of my attempts using Visconti black

Tread lightly!

A teensy bit of black, especially a heavily saturated one like Noodlers, will make a massive impact on a blend.

(Please share some of your mixes, wed love to see them)

Yes indeed, tread lightly when mixing with black. Best to use a neutral black that doesn't have other color components (usually blue) to it. I mixed a bit of Lamy Black with Diamine Golden brown to make a darker/blackish brown that had a bit of greenish hue to it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
