Sailor Manyo Inks - 5 Samplings

I hadn’t heard of these inks before, and they look simply lovely. Thank you so much for this comparison! I haven’t explored Sailor inks yet, but they certainly deserve a closer look. I’ve read lots of positive things about them on FPN. Might be a good brand to explore in 2020.

Like you, I hadn't heard of these inks.

This thread is a helpful introduction.

I agree with you that they're worthy of consideration in 2020.

Wonderful hues! Sumire seems to be very similar to Souten. Which would be nice, since I’ve never found an ink quite like Souten.

Thought I'd just post this here, as it might be useful.

I'm personally considering the Haha and Nekoyanagi as very similar as the types of colours are very similar. I've asked a few people at my uni which of the three they prefer the most (in this photo), and the general consensus is that the Nekoyanagi looks the nicest (by a long way). The Neko is more useable as a colour, but the balance of the different colours in the Haha make it more magical for me personally.

The Studio 123 is a completely different beast. Probably also the most usable and manageable. I also find it easier to create ink pools with the Haha and 123 than the Nekoyanagi. I'm convinced that the 123 flows the best in my Sailor however.

Edit: Photo size was too large (rookie mistake)

Thanks for showing your writing sample. I am surprised that Studio 123 is that dark. I haven't tried it yet because the samples I had seen seemed much lighter - about the same as HaHa. I may just have try it now.

Below some writing with Sailor Manyo Kuzu. I didn’t see any pictures of it in earlier posts.0DC27E28-CBC6-4936-A705-849AF73EE497.thumb.jpeg.de4caa82baf8be13e617ecc2d9588914.jpeg

I don’t think I would have bought this ink myself. It was one of three sample cartridges that came with a pen I purchased.
But over time I started to like it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
