Thanks for the recommendation, Paul. You probably are right that the plastic piece, in proper condition, never should be able to move over to the wrong side of the hump.

I owned a Curidas and ended up returning for a refund. I was not impressed at all. I disassembled and reassembled and it no longer functionEd as intended. I’m amazed at all the small parts required to make the Curidas work properly.

Compare that to the Pilot VP which is a nib unit and two-piece barrel. A child can take a Pilot VP apart and reassemble. Whereas the Curidas is a concatenation of small plastic parts required to work in concert for an aesthetically bland plastic fountain pen. No thanks.

My opinion is of course tainted with their surprise price increase before the pen was even released. If you’re going to raise the prices then it better be an impressive product.

To be fair, I don't think Platinum increased its price for the product — not in Japan, and not in North America — after the manufacturer and/or regional distributor announced it. It simply instructed retailers not to put a 'customary' 20% discount on the MSRP on its new products, and I believe I noticed the same absence of (pre-order?) discount on the #3776 Century Shiun as well, across numerous US-based retailers.

True. It's been a sucky price for the product from the start.

Any idea where we can get replacement nibs and feeds? My feed cracked and the seller will not replace it. Platinum's US dealer won't help as it was an import.

No one will even sell me a new one!

You could try contacting Platinum in Japan directly. Maybe the company's head office will be interested to know how the brand's official stateside (or North American) [/distributor/] (as opposed to an individual dealer) isn't helpful to customers with its customer service policy and/or manner. Even if you didn't buy through an authorised distributor in the US, perhaps Platinum in Japan will still agree to service its product as long as you pay for international shipping both ways.

...Platinum's US dealer won't help as it was an import.

They’ll distribute it but they otherwise wash their hands of responsibility. So much for believing in their own products. (Maybe I don’t blame them considering this brand new product seems to have fundamental issues.)

And yes, I understand it’s not their responsibility in the legal sense. That does not preclude them from helping out. I’ve heard of other brands such as Pilot, Lamy, Pelikan and Visconti (via Coles of London) who have taken on warranty claims, no questions asked.

Instead this post could have been “Wow! Platinum USA really came through for me!” ...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
