Tom Kellie
*** Two Pelikan 2019 Pens — M800 Brown-Black and M205 Star Ruby *** ~ As 2019 began with two older Pelikan fountain pens, there was no reason to suppose that more would be added as they’re seldom on offer in the area where I work. What changed was establishing a very pleasant customer relationship with the 139 year old Fritz Schimpf stationery store in the Swabian university town of Tübingen, Germany. Three shipments from Fritz Schimpf throughout 2019 brought half a dozen Pelikans, five with Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind nibs. For my 66th birthday one month ago, two former students from Peking University each gave me older Pelikan fountain pens. From two to ten in a single year exceeded anything which I had in mind, especially as I’d had no such plans whatsoever. However, there was an unexpected consideration. The IB nib with a Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind on an M800 Souverän Stone Garden was an extraordinary writer. With any ink, the IB nib was smooth, sensitive to the touch, facilitating clear, crisp writing with the subtle details often required for East Asian calligraphy. The more that I wrote with it, the more that I liked it. That led to thoughts of having another Pelikan IB nib of similar high writing quality. As it happened, the Pelikan Souverän M800 Brown-Black was available with an IB nib. Exactly what I wanted…an order was placed. However, overseas fountain pen shipments are scarce in these parts due to various local factors. To make better use of the shipment, an M205 Star Ruby was added as it was offered with a BB nib. When the shipment arrived, all contents were well-packed in bubble-wrap, hence no damage. Four bottles of L’Artisan Pastellier Callifolio ink were ordered, as well as two pads of the superlative Fritz Schimpf A5 Feinpost writing paper. As I've enjoyed writing with Montblanc Blue Petrol ink, a second bottle was ordered for future writing needs. As with the prior shipment, I asked Fritz Schimpf to select one L’Artisan Pastellier Callifolio ink according to their discretion. They chose Bleu Pacifique, which is unlike any of my other inks, hence especially welcome. A final seasonal surprise set apart the shipment. As Christmas and the New Year approach, one’s thoughts return to holidays long past. Where I work it’s not been practicable to receive Christmas cards or gifts from overseas during recent years, for various reasons. Therefore it was a great delight to find a traditional German Advent Calendar enclosed as a gift. It’ll be the sole evidence of Christmas in my living quarters. A copy of Passion, the Pelikan magazine, was also included. “Das Magazin Für Schreibkultur” features high resolution images of Pelikan fountain pens. All of which constitutes a pleasing conclusion to 2019. The Pelikan nest on my writing desk now has one dozen outstanding pens, all of which write well. To share my happiness, here are images of the shipment, including the two Pelikan fountain pens. Tom K. Bo Bo Olson
Tom, Very nice collection.....and you must be a grand teacher, that students from before so honor you with what was not cheap gifts (it don't matter in fountain pens if new or honored), that they knew you would appreciate. I'm glad you found nibs that you like..........You have forced me to look at an IB nib.....perhaps I'll order a 200's nib from Fritz. I do like the springy regular flex of a 200's nib. Semi-flex will fit all your pens under the 800........those '50-60's stubbed semi-flex nibs are the only ones worth getting in oblique.""""With any ink, the IB nib was smooth, sensitive to the touch, facilitating clear, crisp writing with the subtle details often required for East Asian calligraphy.""""I think the normal factory stubbed semi-flex be it straight or oblique might well work with the calligraphy you do..............they are flair nibs.........NOT flex nibs, 3 X a light down stroke should be a max. German vintage '50-70 semi-flex stubs and those in oblique give the real thing in On Demand line variation. Modern Oblique is a waste of money for a shadow of line variation. Being too lazy to Hunt for affordable vintage oblique pens, lets you 'hunt' for line variation instead of having it. www.nibs.com/blog/nibster-writes/nibs-germany & https://www.peter-bo...cts/nib-systems, The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. That's a fresh possibility for the New Year! Tom K. I saw Joshua's notice of that this morning. The Sweet Wife liked it, esp for the flower in the advert. Me? Nah, I think I'll have to pass on this one. That makes 2 of the recent M20x's that missed for me. It's good to see Pelikan experimenting though! The other announcement this morning was the Edelstein Ink of the Year 2020... Moonstone. Did you see that one Tom? Looks to be a wonderful pale gray. Now THAT is something I can get excited about. ( I hope my friend in Mosquitoville likes it, I could repay him for the wonderful Omas Grey he gifted me some time back ). Need realtime photos of both though... I think my pre-order days are over after this past year. "Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working." -Pablo Picasso
Tom Kellie
Moonstone. Did you see that one Tom? Looks to be a wonderful pale gray. Now THAT is something I can get excited about. ~ BillH: Yes! A quality pale grey is highly welcome. I'm the sort who often writes with Iroshizuku Kiri-same. Diamine Quartz Black is a favorite, although dark. Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone has a place reserved on my writing desk. Tom K.

Uncial
Nice collection Tom. My Brown M800 arrived on New Years Eve. It's a keeper. I got a broad nib and find they have a very, very slight stubbish aspect which gives them a bit of interest.
Tom Kellie
A stunning collection, Tom. I know that you are enjoying each of them. ~ DrDebG: The Pelikans of 2019 have all been wonderful writers. Not a single one had any issues about smoothness or ink flow. I feel so blessed! Tom K. Tom Kellie
Congratulations on your fast growing collection. Truly remarkable! ~ LyaT: Thank you so much! At the outset of 2019 I'd had no thought whatsoever of acquiring any Pelikans. It was the sight of the Pelikan Classic M120 Iconic Blue on the Fritz Schimpf Web site which sparked the year's acquisitions. Tom K.
Tom Kellie
That nib looks fantastic ~ WLSpec: From a writing point of view, the Pelikan nibs with Fritz Schimpf Italic Grinds are indeed fantastic. They've surpassed all of my expectations. I hope that in 2020 you'll find a few excellent fountain pens to add to your writing desk. Tom K.

That a lovely way to close out 2019 and celebrate 2020's arrival. Your B nib's stubbish quality sounds very nice. Have you noticed how excellent the piston knob is on the Brown-Black? The slightest force easily turns it. Such high quality engineering and manufacturing. I'm so pleased that yours has arrived. Happy Writing in 2020! Tom K.
dascott
What a lovely nest of Peilkans Tom! Whilst I mostly prefer vintage nibs these days, you have inspired me to want to try the Fritz Schimpf Italic broad. Are these done on certain Pelikans only or do you have to request it? Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2020 (and perhaps a couple more Pelikans)!

As far as I understand, the Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind is offered by request only. It's possible for Pelikan nibs from M and broader. An F or an EF nib might also be looked at by their nib specialist, but perhaps not receiving an Italic Grind. I heartily recommend it, as all Pelikans which we're so processed are outstanding writers of the highest reliability. There are two Pelikan B nib pens with Fritz Schimpf Italic Grinds on my writing desk. Both write so well that I smile with each use. Tom K.

Tom Kellie
Thank you for sharing your experience with and writing samples of the Fritz Schimpf grinds Tom! The nibs look superb! Im happy they make you smile each time you use them the best kind of pen purchases ~ bstnnyc: The four Fritz Schimpf shipments of 2019 brought eight Pelikans to my writing desk. Added with two Pelikans received from former students as birthday gifts, it was a memorable year. The M800 Stone Garden IB nib with a Fritz Schimpf Italic Grind was my “nib of the year”. I'm delighted to use all of the Pelikans as they're reliable and comfortable to hold. I appreciate your very kind comments above. Tom K.
N1003U
Thanks for all of the comments. I also recently picked up an M800 Brown-Black (my first M8xx), and it is a lot of fun. Historically, I use the M10xx for desk duty and M6xx for EDC, so my hand is still trying to figure out what to do with a pen in-between sizes, but I suspect this won't be my last M8xx. It is a versatile pen chassis--big without being huge. I was on the fence about the Star Ruby M205, but there seem to be nothing but positive comments, so it may come drifting into my flock very soon.
