Hi Praxim, I had misdiagnosed the problem, which made it less interesting that previously believed. The moving bits on the section became stuck in the barrel. Having mistaken the inner surface of the wedged floating thread ring as the threading on the barrel itself, I imagined the problem was far worse than it in fact was. Having frowned at the object for a couple of hours (and self-medicated with a spiritous liquor) I was able to persuade the floating ring (and the piece behind it) to leave the barrel and decided I should not waste anyone's time further. In that I failed.

Your title and tags are there, the advice and your problem solving strategy (cognac or single malt?) are present for future enlightenment no matter how obscure the problem :)

So, barley was applied as a lubricant to resolve the issue?
