I am pretty new to this, but I love Birmingham inks. I have only had a couple that I didn't care for. Diamine for great colors, definitely not the bottles and I really like a few Lamy inks.

I would definitely say Diamine. I have yet to try an ink of theirs that I dislike, or doesn't behave in my pens. After that would be Pilot Iroshizuku, then Herbin.

What a no-brainer - Diamine every day for me!

One Diamine 80ml bottle costs £5.90 but Iroshizuku costs £46.32 (50ml bottle £28.95 * 1.6 = £46.32) here in the UK.

Iroshizuku are great, but are they worth that much? Hell no.

Iro costs 24.9 euro on LcdC.

KWZ

I like their inks more than any other brand I have tried. Applies to standard and iron gall inks.

The inks perform very well, I have never had any issues with any of them, and Konrad is a really nice person and does not hesitate to answer people who ask him questions. After all he makes the inks because he has fun writing with them (if you put the money he earns aside).

I wrote him an email because I wanted to know something about the iron gall inks in specific pens. Two days later I got a very detailed answer, not only about the specific pens I asked to use, but also he explained why my pens will be fine based on the chemistry behind his inks. That is what I call customer service and transparency!

Also, the price in Germany is about the same as Pelikan 4001 and only beaten by R&K, which are dirt cheap at about 3,50 €/50 ml.

As much as I like R&K as a company, I don't like the inks as much as the ones made by KWZ.

Trusted is one thing:

Pilot (wet)

Sailor (wet)

Pelikan (dry)

Liked is another:

Birmingham this month

Sailor ink studio last month (low numbered: dry)

Who knows what next month.

One brand, one colour?

That would be Diamine Majestic Blue for me.

Nice, well-behaved, saturated deep blue for a very fair price.

1. Diamine

2. J. Herbin

3. Monteverde

I thought I'd found ultimate happiness with Diamine Blue Velvet. And then I found J. Herbin Bleu de Minuit!

There seems to be no love in this thread for Robert Oster or Colorverse.

All this is personal preference, of course.

Hard to clean, prone to smearing/smudging and on lower quality paper it feathers like crazy...

However, the sheen is really nice!

I hardly trust Diamine inks, most of them are pretty nice though. I trust inks that are easy to clean, doesn't clog or stain pens and are well behaved, nevertheless I have lot of inks that I don't trust much but I really like.

iron gall and nano carbon inks need overseeing.

I can't think of a bad ink. Some are overly saturated or undersaturated, lubricated underlubricated, matte or sheeny etc... Matter of personal taste.

Actually, I trust every brand except Noodler's, PR and Abraxas. Also, I don't trust Lamy because A. they don't print the name of the ink on the bottle or bottle's box or cartridge's box, and B. they don't sell their own LEs in their own country.

I'm new to fountain pens. What are some thoughts on parker quink? I'm trying to find something that is document resistant; permanent seems too vague of a description from what I've read....

Another Pilot pick for the Iros, since those make up the majority of my regularly used inks.

Limited edition.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
