Pilot Vp Bent Nib Pen Now Works Like Fude Pen - What Is The Most Surprised Things Of Your Broken Pen?

(I am not sure this is right place to post this topic, so please forgive me)

I have a Pilot VP special alloy which I bought 2 years ago. One time, I dropped it and it landed the ground by the nib.

Nib was bent up like this (this is current condition of the nib, before the nib was bent and 2 tines were apart)

First, it couldn't write, I was thinking of sending it to Pilot for repair. But then I realize it will take times and also it was already passed the warranty period, so I decided to fix it by myself first.I took the nib out, try to balance the 2 tines to make them together again. And after awhile, I managed to get it write again.

And surprisingly, it can write quite smooth (of course not as smoothly as it did before, but I couldn't ask more)

That's pretty unique, and doesn't write badly at that.

I'm not a fan of Sailor's Fude de Mannen nibs — but then, to be fair, I haven't tried a proper Naginata Fude nib — but some of the Delike 'bent EF' nibs write nicely enough for me. The critical test for me is whether it writes smoothly (and finely!) enough when the feed is facing up and the slit is facing down towards the page. Your Pilot Capless nib now looks a bit like a Delike 'bent EF' nib but not a Sailor (or Duke, or Hero) Fude nib.

I haven't dropped one of my pens nib-first yet, but I've made a mess of an Aurora 88 Minerali piston-fill demonstrator, and I surprised myself by how gung-ho I was in trying to 'fix' it (and, with each step, getting 90% of the way of making it better and then just making it worse than before with a different problem, by trying to 'fix' it perfectly). I was also surprised by my luck in finally restoring it to working order without functional problems other than a few scratches it could look better to me without, but that's about it.

All other pens of mine that broke, well... they just stay broken (or end up more broken in the garbage compactor).

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

not a surprise , if you had enough experience with all these Asian Calligraphy nib then you know whatever fancy name it might be, its still very much the same principle - namely - a portion, some time slim, some time fair, and some time substantial of the frontal part of the nib are bended / curved upward to an angle, it might be a smooth gradual slight curve or it might be a sharp kink , the curve might be simple or it might be compound, generally specialized calligraphy nib also had their tipping specifically tipped to work with the say usage and grounded so .. in a fashion you had create ( out of accident ) a simple calligraphy nib for your VP

Thank you A Smug Dill. I think it is a little bit exaggerated statement to say it is Fude nib. I only tried Fude nib few times, not enough to totally understand that nib type. But I am happy to think that now I have a Fude de mannen accidentally made by myself :P

Thank you Mech-for-i. You are correct about the function of the nib. It is what I realized recently when I have chance to try several types of pen.

And happily, somehow, by my luck, I made a simple calligraphy nib :bunny01: :happycloud9: lol

:D Nice to meet you :D

Does the illustration on this page help? http://www.sailor.co.jp/lineup/fountainpen/10-0212

In a way, it's meant to write like a Zoom nib that doesn't have a bulbous glob of tipping material. A proper Naginata Fude de Mannen nib has tipping, but the nibs on Sailor's much cheaper versions of FDM pens don't have tipping, and so being able to 'reverse-write' with the feed facing up and tip of the nib's 'beak' pointing down is very hit-and-miss on the latter.

Yes, I only tried the cheap version of Fude de mannen not Naginata one. It is the reason why I don't really find that pen special enough for me.

I think I will need to head up to some department where carry Sailor Special nib to try Naginata fude once, otherwise I can't sleep well

I suppose it's, um, passable if you want to get this kind of variation in line width:

and don't care strongly about the smoothness of edges of the lines/shapes on the page.

The Delike bent EF nib, which is closer to the 'special' Pilot Capless nib you inadvertently created, does not produce quite as dramatic a range of line widths:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
