I just got this Montblanc 146 F nib fountain pen from a ebay bid. It was claimed to be new. It looked new too. But the nib was misaligned. You can see in the picture. I spend about an hour and I was able to realign the tines. I am very new to Montblanc and this is the first ever Montblanc pen of mine. I need some help conforming its authenticity. I got it for $251 plus $15 shipping from Italy to California. There were no one placing bid until the very end of the listing. Some one else placed bid before me. I won in the end. Thank you guys!

Note that I did use a strong flashlight to illuminate the cap and saw that the material of the cap did had dark red light emission. The weight of this 146 is very similar to my Pilot custom 823. I would say this 146 is a tiny bit heavier. Lastly, I could NOT find "Pix" ANYWHERE on this pen. I will attach a lot of picture here just to make more opportunities for you too look at the details of my new pen.

I'm not expert like the guys in the MB area of this forum, but it looks like a gray market MB. Which would be to say it's real other then warranty. But again the experts can give you a better idea.

From the pictures, it looks like the real thing. It’s very clean, not so sure about “New” in terms of age. You can never be sure sometimes with things coming out of Italy. I’ve had good experiences and not so good.

Does it suck up ink? Any leaks? How does it write? If it works the way it should and writes well, then i think you did pretty well for yourself. And by the way, Montblanc will service it. Maybe under warranty maybe at a standard service pricing.

I don’t see any obvious signs of it being a fake. But, Wait for the other guys to chime in. If the consensus is good then you should not over think this, fill it with ink and enjoy writing with it.

Display pen boxes are not mail proof, they are display boxes, not designed for robot and Olympic box tossing postal workers. Many pens get jarred enough to knock the tines out of alignment.

It is simple to re-align. Place your thumbnail, at the breather hole and below, press the up tine down, under the low tine for two seconds, do that three times and you should be good to go.

I'd read about that. And the first time is a bit stressing. But by the time you do it three times to different pens, it's ho hum.....no big deal.

One does need a loupe.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Go to a kindly pen store that sells Montblanc (preferably one you have bought from previously) and ask them to stamp the book. That way, if you require some work done on it you might get it free. Many stores of course, will not stamp the book for you. Looks entirely genuine.

Thank you all for the valuable information guys! Seems like I did get a genuine Montblanc 146. I already realigned it myself and actually filled it up with Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo ink. It writes very well! I will certainly try to find a store to stamp my pen book. I think in the Bay Area there are very limited options for me though: I can only go to the Montblanc stores either in SF or Santa Clara.

I will chime in that the outer box, inner box, booklet, and certificate of authenticity means little these days. I have a counterfeit Montblanc which has an identical looking outer box, inner box, booklet and certificate of authenticity.

The things that gave my counterfeit away was how the components looked when disassembled. (threads, etc). These fakes are gaining in accuracy and execution with time. Does it expose a converter when you unscrew the cap to fill it with ink?

It is a proper piston filler pen. Not a blind cap converter. I would not post all those pictures on here if I saw that, since it would be too obvious.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
