How To Score Vintage/discarded/nos Pens From Stores In India?

Hi everyone,

As a fountain pen collection and restoration enthusiast it has been very hard in my city to come across more affordable pens, after exhausting the selection of easily available ones (I have a tight budget as I am a student)

However, a few days back I went to a stationary shop for some work and say that they had some old chelpark inks on display (ofcourse I bought all of them), curiously I asked the man if he had fountain pens, he told me that he had many old unsold ones and didn't know where they were, after a lot of persuation he agreed to look for them and have them ready in a few days.

So the next day I went and he said he didn't find them and to come back a few days later. So I did, again and again. (was pretty desperate to get a hold of some childhood oens)

Fortunately, after a week or so, he finally had them ready. They were not exactly vintage, but old pens indeed, some quite damaged. I got a few Camlin No. 6 pens, some Flora Pens (the model number is not known) and a couple Hero 323. All of them were more or less usable atleast after some repairs.

This brings me to my question, if this man had old stocks, probably other shops do too, and it would be great to have a few tips on how I can get these shops to sell me their old stocks, even if they're broken or damaged, how do I persuade them to dig them out for me, because every other shops I've asked, have said 'no we don't have fountain pens" to my face.

Btw I'm new to FPN (this is my first thread)

Regards,

Anurag.

Good for you. You have been bitten by fountain pen bug. Keep persuading people. That's the way.

Patience and lots of leg work. Enter any shop that you feel might have stocks and enquire. Shopkeepers want to get rid of dead stock. One tip. Dont cherry pick, dont haggle over prices. Buy in entire lots. This helps build confidence and the shopkeepers usually direct you to other shops who might have dead stocks available.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Thanks a lot. Exactly what I'm gonna do. I'm ready for the legwork, but the patience I have to learn 😅

Hi Anurag ... nice to see someone willing to do the legwork to source out old fountain pens ... as Hari said, have patience too ... follow Hari's advice ... I know ... he's been my pen guru for ten years now ... and a great friend ... and don't lose sight of your target, chase it, you may slacken a bit here and there, but don't let go ... here are two posts on my search(es) for vintage fountain pen brands ending in success here in Hyderabad ... would hopefully inspire you not to give up the chase ...

Also, can you provide me with some information for Kolkata? I am a regular at the pen hospital and its amazing, but it shouldn't hurt to know about other such places around here, with a better collection perhaps.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
