Monteverde Inks With Rotten Egg Smell

Unfortunately it's been three days and no response from Yafa (and ten days waiting to hear from their Australian distributor) so I don't expect I will. The silence is very loud.

I think the biggest take away from this is to inspect all bottles of ink before filling a pen - a quick look for SIBs and a sniff just in case. I sort of did before, but going forward will make it a firm habit. I already do keep good records of what is loaded in what and can always track back. Thankfully the Monteverde Brown Sugar was only used with a glass dip pen to make a swatch the day it came home and never actually inked a pen so the only loss is the AU$15 I spent on the ink. :glare:

Will work for pens...

I have a few bottles of Monteverde ink and 4 are fine but my Carribean Blue, California Teal, and D.C. Supershow teal all have a sulfur-y rotten egg smell.

Longer than that for me. I think almost a month now. :( I ran my Horizon Blue through a coffee filter and dumped some phenol in it; hopefully it won't be a total loss. Other than the part where it started barfing clouds of sulfurous gas, I really like ink!

  • 1 year later...

I had two bottles of Monteverde ink which went bad. I've bought them end of 2021.

California Teal developed a thick velvet layer of mold on the surface emitting a nasty stink. Charoite was growing mold which formed a slimy blob when attempting to fill a pen. Charoite did not smell bad but totally clogged up my Graf von Faber-Castell Classic Anello Ivory fountain pen. Had to remove the nib, feed and converter, clean and disinfect with Formaldeyde and Phenol before assembling back. I have many inks from Monteverde but will NOT buy anymore, no matter how nice the color might be.

Ubi bene ibi patria.

Sadly, I never did hear back from Yafa, and that bottle of Horizon Blue was a total write off. Fortunately, about that time I discovered Scribe Indigo, which I like even better anyway.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
