Respected Drscholl Sir,

I'm attaching the Matte finish pens in these colours for your reference.

Dear Mr Kandan

I've been admiring these for a while and the matte finish is intriguing. May I ask please about the golden brown colour? In some photos it looks closer to gold/yellow (which I like) and others closer to brown (tan - which I'm less keen on) - could you let me know which you think it's closer to please? thanks

It is not Tan definitely

Anyone have a notion of how wide the kanwrite nibs are? I am debating fine vs flex vs medium.

my only experience is with the Kanwrite flex and it's not bad.

Flex is a big word, but this is not even semi-flex (as BoBo would call it) its a moderate spring.

The nib was slightly scratchy for me, so I gave it some micromesh. But that's just me, my nibs need to be smooth, I seem to remember you saying you like some feedback, and you are looking for fine line, so it might work for you.

In terms of nib size the Kanwrite flex nib is a F.

Compared to my Omas EF it's slightly wider but just a bit, I would say it's a real F.

If I were you I would only go for the medium if you are looking for a wider line.

But since I'm me :) if I had to choose again I would probably go for the M, but because I am not really too fond of F nibs, I tried this because I was curious about the flex, given there is not much in there, I might as well have chosen an M which I prefer in terms of line width.

hope it helps...

Actually this does help, I would probably go with a kanwrite fine or medium as I think flex is likelier more difficult nib to get right.

Now the main thing to decide is whether that step down is a deal breaker or not. I'd like a big pen, that model 5 is beautiful, but it is not cheap. I don't like step downs in general. The question is if the thick barrel opens the proximal thumb and index separation too much, to the point that one must clamp down harder with the distal thumb, index and middle finger to compensate. Comfort is key! I'm a bit obsessed with ergonomics.

On my Model 5, the distance between the 'lip' of the grip section (the flare before the nib) and the step up to the barrel is about 33mm (including the threads, which are smooth and relatively flat). For me, that's enough distance for the grip section to make little if any discernible difference:

Does the section taper a lot?

Btw, is that a 1.1mm italic? Lovely handwriting with a subtle flair

The section has a moderate taper, but it's not extreme: from 14mm adjacent to the threads, down to 11.5mm at its narrowest point, just before the 'flare'.

(The diameter of the threaded part is ~15.5mm, if that makes a difference!).

My Model 5 isn't inked up at the moment (the writing in the photo was made by another pen) - but the nib on this one is a M JoWo nib ground to a fine stub (or cursive italic?) by fpnibs.com.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
