Fpn Server Migration

Recommended Posts

We're working on this - is likely a server configuration setting, and will likely take some time to figure out considering everything has changed on the new server.

No hurries. I'm grateful that you're working on it, instead of the dreaded "it works fine for me" :)

By the way, I agree with everybody else that the upgrade is noticeable. I didn't think that performance was bad before, but now it's snappy.

:) - Thanks.

I've noticed it straight away. Unfortunately tending to FPN is for all of us a volunteer job, and Monday I had to be at work again. Away from home as well, which makes it a little harder to do things here - very much dependent on internet access after hours. Fortunately, tonight it appears fine :).

We are currently running the latest tech, form a server, processor and hard disk POV, and that makes quite the difference indeed :).

Warm regards, Wim

More data points re:update read.

If you go up one level it does show that a subforum was read or marked read but if you then go up one more level the subforum does not show as read.

AbE:

Make that sometimes.

It worked in one subforum but not in the next one.

BUMMER: hate intermittent issues.

So do we :).

We are working on it, as is Hosting Support :).

Thanks to all the folks who make this the best web site on the internet!

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

Ok, appears to be fixed now ....

It was indeed a caching problem, to be exact, a caching time-out problem. :)

Wim:

As a frequent participant on FPN, My experience was that the migration was invisible to me as a user of the site.

I do detect greater speed on page loading and other elements of use.

So applause to all that were involved...job well done.

I do detetc quite a bit of lag on page loading and page that will not load complete leaving the page forever in loading state , and then it would hold socket and would not load any other tab which goto the same domian ( forum section, thread etc ). Sometime pages just will forever leave in WAITING for www. .... .com state

Please do try clearing your browser cache, temp files, history, cookies, etc. We are on a new server, with a new ip-address for the host, so one's browser may get confused.

I'm getting the very occasional issue with pages failing to load properly (the same as when I had ads crashing the page). But now, when I go back a page and then go forward, it's cleared up.

The "unfollow" button seems to mostly be fixed. But I just had an issue with it not responding. But then when I went back to the main "View New Content" page and then forward again in one thread just now, the button wasn't there.... And then when I went back and tried to go forward it was very sluggish.

OTOH, I had no problem getting to this page. We'll see what happens when I post, then exit and go forward to unfollow the thread, and if I have a problem I'll add an addendum to this post.

Hi Ruth,

Please clear your browser history, temp files, cache and cookies. That should fix it. We have been making quite a few changes to the server, even this weekend, and that may have confused your browser with whatever it has stored.

I've done that. I'm still having a little trouble with the system hanging -- or at leas being sluggish at times -- when I scroll through pages in some threads, but it does seem better. And clearing the cache did seem to (at least for the moment) stop the occasional page only partially loading. So fingers crossed....

Hi Ruth,

Good to hear there is some improvement.

With some browsers for the full effect you may have to clear everything a couple of times, IME.

Well so, far, everything seems to be working right today, Wim.

Thanks for being awesome. I can't imagine how much work was involved in the migration.

It's feeling really good here on the new server.

Thanks so much for putting the work in and making this site better!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
