My Third Estie (In Less Than A Week!) - Dollar Pen

howdydave

Recommended Posts

I got my third (really my fourth) Estie from MidnightPens.

(My third was also a Dollar pen from eBay but I paid more money for a "boring black pen" in inferior condition -- live and learn!)

I want a Dollar pen but not for a lot of dollars. Congratulations on yours. I have 4 Esterbrooks, one J and 3 SJ. I lack one in blue.

I want to get a few extra nibs like 9314-B, maybe a 2442.

Best to get them in restored condition, and Gary will usually customize your nib selection.

These are all different sizes. Do you have a preference for any particular size?

Corgicoupe,

I'm not going to make any decisions until I also have a J...

Besides... two of them are still in the mail and I haven't had them in my hot little hands yet.

Between the SJ and the Transitional J, I think that the longer Trans-J will be more comfortable for me as a writing instrument.

Actually I have TWO Dollar Pens on the way...

A Model A from MidnightPens and this "Demi" from eBay.

I don't know what "Demi" is supposed to signify except for the fact that it is a shorter version (4.5".)

Can you explain more? I’m not sure who Gary is.

Why did I look at this thread?

Deep breath, I have enough Esties, I have enough Esties.

I don’t need another Esterbrook. Not even a blue one.

Unless I find really good j-bars. No!

Sigh

I think the Demi may be the model A. The full size is the Dollar B.

Ah, the chirping of a newly-born Estie-head, first emerging into the world!

Welcome to the club. :)

Major haul in my mailbox today.

3 Esterbrooks:

  • Dollar Pen Model A (MidnightPens)
  • LJ (MidnightPens)
  • Demi Dollar Pen (eBay)''

Gary's pvc pipe packaging is outstanding!

Best polishing and waxing I've seen on any of the restored pens that I've purchased to date.

e.g.; The Demi Dollar that I got on eBay had wax in the holes on the cap.

I think that I've found someone with a real passion for his work!

That would be me. I need to check in more often! Thanks for the compliments, everyone.

The short slender Dollar pen is referred to as the H model. I also don't use any wax on any of my pens.

And, I have about 100 waiting in my box to repair. I just shot photos of a trans J with the palladium trim (and a nice patina) and a 2442 stub nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
