Hi all,

Taylor here. I am a 29-year-old fountain pen newbie, stationery junkie, 3D modeler/VR engineer and artist.

I have always loved pens, hand-writing, paper planning, journaling, and so on, but for some reason never had a fountain pen until very recently. Didn't have one at all until my birthday in June, when I was gifted a blue LAMY Al-Star. I used it for about 4 months, LOVED it, and then it got destroyed due to my cluelessness...Now I've ordered a new Al-Star (in Graphite) and have my eye on a TWSBI 580ALR as my next one.

I'm a newbie but I really enjoy the whole fountain pen experience. I think it actually benefits the battle to keep hand-writing (and handwriting/cursive) alive, because it allows the nerdier among us to really get technical and tinker and customize our writing experience. I'm a 3D modeler/VR engineer in my day job, so go figure, of course I love the technical side of it.

I'm hoping to just learn and nerd out here. :)

Hello Taylor,

Welcome to FPH! Wherebouts do you live? There is a very enjoyable & active pen club meeting roughly every month in Richmond. Most of the attendees are far closer to your age than mine. I have been using fountain pens since beginning first grade 59 years ago. Back then, we could use pencils or cartridge pens, but no ballpoints were allowed until middle school.

Depending on your part of the state, you may be interested in a group which meets in Roanoke. Sorry, but don't know details about that one.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Best wishes,

Barry

Hello Taylor and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Greetings Barry, I recently moved back to RVA area --Midlothian. Could you point me in the direction for more information on the Richmond group? Edited by mrloco

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
