London Pen Show / Lwes 2018

Who's going? Last year was my first show and I'm looking forward to going to it again this year.

Assuming it's happening, of course. I'm getting a server error for the ukpenshows.co.uk website. Perhaps those in the know on here have a channel of communication which has all the details.

LWES is the furthest south that I'm aware of. Leaving credit cards behind only protects slightly as many of the smaller vendors will only take cash anyway.

Looking forward to it.

It'll make a relaxing change from driving up, down and across the country looking at Universities for our two hopefuls . . . :)

Thanks. Looks like the date and place I had written down ages ago is still valid. I shall look out for London Pen Club members too.

cash is a possible advantage over plastic - waving ten and twenty pound notes under a seller's nose might induce a price discount.

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

I've never been to a pen show and I'd love to go to one, although I think I'd need to leave my credit cards at home. Are there any south of London?

The next closest is Bristol in February (I think). About 1/5th the size of London.

I didn’t realise the London pen show had so many stands.

Yes, there are a LOT of pens to look at!

It's a few years now since i made the trip, trains being a real pain on a Sunday. However I might just make the effort this year.

The last time I went I made the mistake of purchasing a rather expensive vintage pen from a stall located on the corner where the floor plan shows 24 (probably not that exact table). The lighting was not great and it was only after I was on the train home that I spotted a significant hairline. I suspect the seller was very aware of the issue and making the most of the circumstances.

Taking a loupe or avoiding darker corners would be my advice to those wanting value for money.

What a marvellous day, made all the nicer for meeting up and spending a fair amount of time with mikb0at who was instrumental and key in my major purchase . . . a brand new Aurora Archivi Storici 012. WOW

The room was heaving and buzzing, filled with friendly enthusiasts and knowledgable vendors.

I spent all my birthday money and a little more. It was SO worth it. The Aurora has already shot into my top 5 pens, easily.

Pen: Aurora Archivi Storici 012 with a STUNNING F / XF nib   - £50
Journal: My first, and not last, Leuchtturm1917  - £10
Ink: Sailor SouBoku  from The Writing Desk, show price £19

Chuffed to bits. No regrets.

Thank you everyone who made it such a beautiful afternoon.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
