Nakaya Ao And Midori Tamenuri

At the Washington DC Pen Show I had a table with my some of my extra Nakayas that were getting a lot of attention. One question I was asked was about the difference between the now discontinued and highly sought after Ao Tamenuri and the newer Midori Tamenuri, I didn't have an example of either there with me. Now home, I am able to post pictures from my collection and thought the answer might be of general interest.

Both pictures below show an Ao Tamenuri on left (with clip) and a Midori Tamenuri on right.

The Ao Tamenuri is has a greater blue content in the green. I have seen Ao range from the blue green you see here to almost pure green. Some people have reported mostly blue. The difficulty in accurately reproducing the color is one reason why it was discontinued and is so sought after today.

The Midori Tamenuri I have seen is a much brighter color green, with a higher yellow content. I do not find it quite as subtle as the Ao.

These finishes are all hand done and variation can and should be expected. I can't say that these pictures are typical of every Nakaya of these finishes, but I thought the comparison photos might be of interest to others who have the same question.

Great photo -- I've never owned a midori-tame to be able to take a side by side. I've personally found midori-tame too high contrast.

Some ao is more blue, some more green -- but even the greener ones are a darker forest-y green, in comparison to midori's bright... grassy green.

The links to the pictures don't seem to be working anymore. Any chance of seeing these beauties again?

I apologize that all the old pictures were lost and links rendered inoperable when hosting site Fototime crashed.   Since you messaged me and asked for a comparison of Midori Tamenuri and Toki Tamenuri, here are some pictures.  Perhaps other readers of this thread may enjoy seeing them as well.

For anybody not familiar with the designations, Midori Tamenuri are the green pens and Toki Tamenuri the brown

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
