Refilling Cross Pencil Cassette

CarrotBasket

Recommended Posts

I bought an cross mechanical pencil yesterday confident I could make it work and turns out I uses a lead cassette (I didnt know they existed) and it came empty.

Is there really no way to refill these with loose lead?

Is there a cap that could be carefully removed? If so drop in a lead and recap it. That's what I would try to do.

That is some of the best advice for pen repairs 😂

After tinkering some more I disassembled the cassette from the eraser side and pushed out the other plastic cap. Turns out the cassette had a rubber piece that was broken and bent inwards. Without it the pencil seems to be working just like a loose lead pencil would 🤔

My Cross Townsend pencils use such a lead cassette. I fill the lead cassette with 3B or 4B leads by removing the eraser and inserting the leads, replacing the eraser after that. You can purchase a replacement cassette directly from Cross, https://www.cross.com/en/departments/refills/shop-all-pen-and-pencil-refills/by-writing-type/pencil-leads-and-erasers, if needed

Be careful with the lead tube which advances from the end of the pencil. If this tube is damaged (bent) then the lead will not advance properly through the pencil. If replacing the lead cassette does not allow the lead to advance properly then you can send your pencil to Cross for repair.

That happened to me before, I fixed it by inserting a small pin te same size as a 0.5 lead and manipulating it. It is a nice feature that it can retract on such cross pencils

It is great that you were able to find such a small pin! I have never found 0.5 mm strong pin. I would like to have such a pin as it would come in handy for clearing the lead tube on 0.5 mm pencils.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
