What Japanese Pen Did You Receive In The Mail Today?

Most of us buy a new pen at least bi monthly. Today I received a Pilot 845 with Medium nib. I am trying to get a representative sample of the Big Three pen manufacturers for my collection.

Funny timing on this thread. I don't often get Japanese pens in the mail, but today I happened to receive a Hakase in cocobolo wood.

Stunning. Love it. A Hakase is a dream pen - built just for you. How does it write? I know you're partial to broad nibs ----

Congratulations again!

The nib is stiff, as I would expect for a Pilot #15 that is not an FA. But the pen is super smooth and the flow is generous with Iroshizuku ink. I would even say it is a bit ont he wet side like some of my larger Palikan nibs, but just with a smaller tip.

in limied testing so far it has shown to be great for fast writing as it keeps up the flow and provides little resistance in quick directional changes (as i write in sloppy cursive). It may be too wet for someone who block prints.

What has been the revelation so far is the comfort level of holding the pen. Because the threads are rather easy on the fingers, I am able to hold the pen in various grips and different angles depending on the need. As more of a finger writer the light weight is a positive.

I want to do a more direct comparison with a Stylo Art BO pen I own. the shapes are somewhat similar and both use a Pilot #15 and con-70. The question becomes is the Hakase worth twice the cost of the Stylo Art when they are both handmade in Japan out of similar woods?

A Sailor Pro Gear Slim Ocean with EF nib and a slightly-used Pro Gear Imperial Black with F nib (my first standard Pro Gear).

I love them both. The Imperial Black doesnt have a mark on it, it looks brand new and I love the matt finish. The Ocean is lovely, more green than blue (in my opinion, YMMV).

Had been lusting after one of the Eboya Hougas that Sakura Fountain Pen Gallery sell, and fear of missing the one I wanted spurred me on to buy it. It arrived today - what a gorgeous pen. And I've never received such a beautiful package containing such unexpectedly fabulous extra goodies too - thank you, Catherine!

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

B) Why do you ask? Is someone sending me a Japanese pen?

Yes TSherbs, the pen gods have blessed you. Be on the lookout for a white swan with a Nakaya clasped in its beak.

  • 3 weeks later...

Monday I received two Sailor Standard 1911s. One from Japan with A HM nib that is 21K. The other is a Standard 1911 that has a 14K MF nib from Nibs.com. Today I received a Pilot 912 with a SFM nib. Pics later.

Tuesday I received my first Nakaya, a desk pen in Aka-tamenuri, with a broad Mottishaw CI. It is flawless, and writes beautifully. I was surprised at how large it is. It is shown next to a Pelikan M600.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
