Opinions On The Nakaya Desk Pen That I Have Ordered

Recommended Posts

I just ordered a Nakaya desk pen, with a broad nib modified to cursive italic from Mottishaw. It is in stock so it should not take the usual months to get to me. I have been fascinated with Nakaya for some months. I am so anxious to receive it. To break up my wait and anxious anticipation, I thought you might tell me your experiences with Nakaya, especially the desk pen in aka-tamenuri.

No one has a Nakaya experience to share? Well, perhaps I will share mine with you.

I don't have any experience with Nakaya but, boy, I'm interested in them! Beautiful pens!! Looking forward to hearing more about yours.

I guess the pictures below will say something about my experience. In addition to these 11 I now have, there are probably almost a dozen others I have sold along the way in order to fund new objects of affection. Simply put, it's very hard to go wrong with Nakaya. You may notice in the top picture, there are two of the Aka Tamenuris in the middle, one with gold trim and one with rhodium. Aka is a lovely finish and I'm sure you will love yours when it arrives.

Sharp eyed viewers may spot the three pens in now discontinued Ao Tamenuri on far left of top photo, including one very hard to find Portable Ascending Dragon in Ao.

Nakaya is my favorite - cos of the Piccolo Cigar and the gorgeous urushi.

I have a kuro tamenuri Desk Pen, and I love it. It looks like a magic wand, and everyone who has ever held it has marvelled at its excellent balance in hand. It's a beauty!

Mine has a fabulous ruthenium-plated F nib. It isn't inked at the moment, cos I have three Piccolos, two Pilots, and a Sailor doing daily duty these days.

I hope you enjoy your Desk Pen very much. The aka tamenuri finish is gorgeous.

Gorgeous collection, whichwatch! I have only one Naka-ai and one Writer (the matte black Piccolo, like yours) and...the Desk Pen and six Piccolos (including the Writer).

THanks! Naka-ai is my favorite shape. I find Piccolos a bit small and will likely sell the two I have. I have never owned a Nakaya desk pen but have certainly thought about it!

Biancitwo, I hope you'll post pictures of your desk pen when it arrives.

As soon as I can get one that does justice to the subject. Between my office and home, my available light has disappointed when photographing pens.

Your posts and whichwatch's photo have heightened my anticipation. That is precisely why I began this topic. Thank you.

I had the same thought about a magic wand. Agree, that finish is gorgeous.

I have only seen aka-tamenuri once, but I found it very beautiful. My desk pen is ao-tamenuri, and it's the most comfortable, beautiful pen I have ever owned.

Beautiful works of art! I'm positive you'll love it.

"Yes."

I don't have the desk pen, but I do have four other Nakayas. They are all wonderful pens.

Your photos and words were invigorating and help pass the time till my Nakaya arrives. However, my nib remains back ordered, and you've sent no words or photos for two days. Impatience is creeping in. Only Nakaya photos and stories will get me through to delivery. I'm counting on you to carry me. Otherwise, I'm in for a difficult time. Thank you in advance.

Here are a couple that weren't in my collection photos above, since I sold them somewhere along the way. Two Decapod Twists, on the left in Heki Tamenuri and on the right in Ao Tamenuri. The lightling wasn't great so the colors in the picture don't compare to the beauty in real life.

The Ao Tamenuri is blue with green, and the Heki brown with green? Beautiful. I think you’ve given me another day or two of patience.

Heki is brown with green. I have always thought of Ao as green with green, but some call it blue. Here are two photos of Ao's, left to right a Portable, a Long, and a Naka-ai

My Nakaya Aka-Tamenuri desk pen rests patiently at Mottishaw’s shop waiting for its back-ordered gold nib. I have a number of wonderful Pelikans, modern and vintage, an excellent Sailor (after Pendleton Brown worked on it), and several other most enjoyable pens. But, thinking ahead to the Nakaya repeatedly creeps into my thoughts; not while I am writing, but shortly upon stopping. I must keep busy, and breathing.

biancitwo, I'm sure you will find your Nakaya desk pen to be excellent, but in a different way from your Pelikans and Sailor. That is the wonderful thing about our obsession: fine quality pens of all types each have things about them that are unforgettable, but with each type this is a different quality. We appreciate each type of pen for what it does superbly well.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
